Community is about finding the way forward together. Right now? It's all about who gets to put whose hand in your pocket for the remaining support dollars.

Despite what you've been told, it is rarely meritocracy that wins - it is almost always other things. You can be the most capable person in the room, and not be the person who comes out on top.

If you publish your software using an 'open source' license, then you are sharing outbound and can have no expectations of something in return. 1/4

Picard morality tip: If one side of a conflict preaches purity of bloodline above communal benefit for all, join the other side.

There is no universe in which Debian stable and Fedora will ship 100% compatible runtime environments with the same feature set and ignoring that means you're not actually fixing the problem

One of the things I learned through out my career is that it is relatively easy to say smart things in a meeting. It’s harder to make those smart things real. The hardest thing is making your smart ideas feel like everyone’s idea. Your idea isn’t great until it’s bigger than you.

Rage Against The Machine is a terrible slogan and scares suburban voters, I prefer Reform And train The Machine.

We have been working on radicalizing tech workers for a decade now. We have made great strides to be sure. But too many of us are still way too polite about it. It won't change unless we make it change by fucking shit up, from the inside and outside.

One other observation - sometimes the job of a leader is to shut the fuck up and eat it. It doesn’t always matter what you think. Why run off about escalating? Why not just recognize that the list caused problems, acknowledge it, acknowledge the obvious complicity, and move on?

If you think being open to discussion means you don't have to make any decisions as a leader, you've lost the entire fucking plot. And because they abdicated that leadership role at that time, they're now in a position where they're pushing people out of the company.

Stakeholders can be frustrating if you believe it’s their job to give you the input that’s suited to your needs. A better approach: assume it’s YOUR job (as a designer or PM) to extract their goals & wisdom in an efficient & respectful way, then translate as you need to.

there are no Good and Evil companies, just like there are no Good and Evil people. the majority of people have unhealthy emotional lives and behavioral patterns to varying degrees, and there are a few who are truly psychologically and physically damaging to those around them,
