サンズイに上下という字が江戸時代から使われているにも関わらず漢和辞典や10万字近く漢字を集めたユニコードの漢字集合からも逃れていて、文字を知っている現地住民がいた。江戸時代から200年余り、字書になくとも狭い界隈で現在まで伝わっている貴重な例として興味深い発見だった。
