@anatomalli A1 Unfortunately in the US the lack of diversity in donor ethnicities is also linked to history, culture and trust, but it gives us opportunities to talk about these issues and patients as educators #AnatomyDEI #Anatomy20

#AnatomyDEI currently have students examining textbook images of PoC in OB/GYN and Derm. Know similar is being done in clinical and basic science departments elsewhere. Would love to know if a network exists for these students to plug into.

@anatomalli A2: It‘s a slow process to build trust and may not be built. I hope respectful outreach with kids in the lab might trickle up to their adults or plant seeds for the kids to think about when they are older. #Anatomy20 #AnatomyDEI

@ToppK Well, for me I think, there should be a standard reference which could be made available following a thorough review by medical/anatomical educators. #Anatomy20 #AnatomyDEI

@lamsciworld @angeliquee_93 Exactly. We were fortunate to host Dr. Sabine Hildebrandt from @Harvard earlier this semester to speak at @iupui and @iusm about #NaziAnatomy. She talked extensively about the eugenics work. Here's a link to her recorded lecture: https://t.co/TSCZd7JaQz #anatomyDEI

@anatomalli I would suggest more local interactions with potential donors. Being very open and answering questions about the donation process. Especially for those institutions that have donation programs. #AnatomyDEI

@LauraEJohnson3 @KateLesciotto @anatomalli And the donor commemoration ceremonies you organize @LauraEJohnson3 with the students are another way to build trust with the families and friends #AnatomyDEI #Anatomy20

@angeliquee_93 We already touched on issues of reluctance to participate and distrust of science in certain populations as regards body donation. Similar issues exist for clinical research as well. #anatomyDEI #anatomy20

@anatomalli @allison_nesbitt Has anyone done outreach events with their surrounding community to try and build trust and discuss the importance of body donation? I would assume that this has to be done in different ways for different communities and cultures. #AnatomyDEI

@anatomalli @KateLesciotto It will take time to garner more interest and trust. Small is better than nothing at all! Keep it up! #AnatomyDEI

@lamsciworld @OrganJM @angeliquee_93 Sadly not limited to natural scientists. Philosophers, mathematicians, etc. were all avowed racists. Five centuries will take a long time to overcome, but this is the necessary movement needed. #notfastenough #ontherighttrack

@allison_nesbitt @anatomalli I had an experience like this - outreach event to bring a few older Girl Scouts interested in anatomy into a cadaver lab. Their moms came along as well, and several got more excited than their kids! Later, one mom emailed to inquire about body donation. #AnatomyDEI

@angeliquee_93 Some good examples come from the legacy of #HenriettaLacks and the #TuskegeeSyphyllisExperiment. Although there is isn't distrust related to #Nazi research during the #Holocaust, most people would be offended to know how much current knowledge was obtained unethically #anatomyDEI
