After 4.5 years, I left Fanfix and SuperOrdinary last month. We started Fanfix at my kitchen table and it has grown now to: -$100m+ revenue -$10m+ ebitda -5m+ active paying users -Acquisition by SuperOrdinary Our mission was to make being a creator a viable career path and we

Slash, @slashapp, just crossed $150M in annualized revenue profitably. We went from $2M -> $150M in 24 months making us the fastest-growing business banking* platform of all time. 700 word post on 4 guiding principles that got us here. This cost us >$10M dollars to learn...

Proud to announce that I have made the switch from Tech to Acting, co-starring with Margot Robbie in my first movie. This has been a secret for a while but I am very grateful to our amazing cast and crew as well as Sony Pictures for believing in our crazy vision.

Apparently I’m mentioned in the first few minutes of the AppMafia course so here are my thoughts: I went to college with @blakeandersonw and know @zach_yadegari, @hunterjisaacson too. There are a lot of threads going around about profit margin etc… it’s not that relevant given

You can't eat Gross Margin. Founders/VC's talk in Gross Margin, Net Margin is really the only number that matters.

A friend is flying out a new hire for a work trial New hire default booked Premium Economy "because it has a bit more legroom" and then asked if he could upgrade to first class because "it's only $400 rn" Do you un-invite him or respect the balls?

(5/5) Creators want 3 things: to get famous, get rich & have community. TikTok made creators famous, OnlyFans made creators rich & Twitch gave creators community. Creator Economy companies built overcomplicated products that creators simply didn’t care about.

(4/5) Distribution = understanding culture: We were 20 when we founded Fanfix and we deeply understood what was culturally relevant. Most Creator Economy companies tried to manufacture culture and it didn’t work.

(3/5) Distribution is the only true moat: Our competitor blew $33m on unnecessary engineering talent to build a product that we built for <$500k. Instagram/Snapchat were hard to build in the early 2010’s, but all creator economy products of the 2020’s were commoditized.

(2/5) ZIRP destroyed the creator economy: Brands flushed with cash in 2021 threw money at creators, massively inflating the creators’ expectations vs what they would actually convert. This meant that creators had little interest in taking risks to try new things.

(1/5) Web 3 was dumb and shoved down people’s throats by investors. 99.9% of creators didn’t care about “Web 3.” Yet every investor would ask us why we weren’t building Web 3 tools for creators. Most smart founders pivoted to Web 3 and failed to get PMF.

My last company Fanfix just crossed $200,000,000 paid out to creators. Here is why almost every other Creator Economy company failed 🧵:

(5/5) You need the charisma & intellect to back up your online persona: Meeting Roy, I was surprised by his humility. To achieve success, you have to balance hubris with humility, which Roy does surprisingly well.

(4/5) You can’t be all bark, no bite: If Mr Beast didn’t deliver on his crazy promises, nobody would watch his videos anymore. If Roy couldn’t deliver a $15m a16z round and real revenue numbers for @cluely, his tactics wouldn’t work.

(3/5) Default nobody cares about you: When you say vanilla things, repeat the consensus narrative and post boring videos, nobody cares about you and you don’t get any attention. The more outlandish the things you say on social media, the more viral they become.

(2/5) Ragebait turns your biggest haters into your biggest brand ambassadors: The more emotional your posts make people feel, the more they engage with your content and the higher up the algorithm you get driven. Haters think they are hurting you, they are really promoting you.

(1/5) @im_roy_lee Saw that the algorithm rewards extremism: From Bonnie Blue to Andrew Tate to Alex Cooper, all of these influencers (regardless of what you think about them) tapped into the fact that the algorithms reward extremism.
