Ancestral Ur- Sox was even ready to fulfill the function of modern Sox2 to induce pluripotent stem cells in mice. Its intimate partner - POU family proteins with its most famous member OCT4 - needed more evolutionary tinkering to become an animal transcription factor. 2/n

Animal Stem cells probably appeared 700-800 million years ago. We found that two key molecules that make our stem cells the way they are even older than that as they even existed before the evolution of animals. 1/n
