“Chatbots are going to render books obsolete” is an amazingly dumb take because the information they give you was illegally trained on millions of books. Gullible people see these bots as omniscient gods when they are plagiarism machines. They can’t think, they can only steal.

in college I started getting emails for some random guy, including his cell phone bills. I didn't actually have his real email, so I called him to tell him that his emails were coming to me. and this absolute doorknob of a man TOLD ME I WAS WRONG

Not only that, but, the computers require so much computing power, which generates so much heat, they use a LOT of water to keep them from overheating. Training ONE AI program for three weeks can require over 250,000 gallons. It's harmful RIGHT NOW, let alone long-term.
I was in a workshop a few weeks ago and they talked about how harmful Chat GPT will be longterm. One search uses as much electricity as leaving the lights on for like 20 minutes. I never even thought about that.
