I think this is important not because I want to Understand them better or Be Nice to them, but because there are SO MANY OF THEM OUT THERE, and they make up such a large part of the right's base. And they don't even know what they are doing!.

All of this is downstream from the fact that these guys do not have a conceptual or experiential framework outside of their own direct experience. List some arcane RW talking point (welfare fraud, elementary schools teaching pedophilia), and they "know a guy who. ".

I think this is actually an important thing to get right! Many of these guys are just normal dumb guys who love their families and are "color blind" not because it's a nefarious way to reassert (jargon) but because until recently that was the default way our culture dealt w/race.

If you have a conservative male family member in your life over the age of, say, 50, I *know* you've heard him say this. One of my favorite cases was a friend's dad listing "The University of COMMON FREAKIN' SENSE" as his alma mater on facebook back in the day.

One thing I really liked about the film is that it understood this crucial part of the right wing boomer American psyche. They sit and watch TV all day and hear horror stories about how ObamaBidenAOCThey are running the country into the ground, and they think THEY could fix it
