Hugely significant Irish golf history made tonight as
@leona_maguire
wins the Drive On Championship on the LPGA Tour - a 3 stroke victory on 19 under par with a final round 67. It’s the first ever victory by an Irish woman on any main professional tour & dominant on the final day
Longford 18 year-old Cian McPhillips ran a 1 min 46.1 sec 800 metres today in Abbotstown after a week when Leaving Cert issues must have been wrecking his head. He is now the second fastest Under 20 in European Athletics history & 6th fastest Under 20 in World 800 metre history😳
Hard to express reaction at Wentworth to Sergio Garcia’s withdrawal after a 1st round 76, giving no reason. When he took his place in the field, the first alternate was fellow Spaniard Alfredo Garcia Heredia who is 134th on the R2D with the cutoff for 2023 cards currently at 121.
I could stare and stare at this pic... Never in 30 years of covering track and field could I imagine this little island hanging off the edge of Europe finishing half a stride off gold in a World Championship 4x100 relay and splitting two super powers of sprinting in the medals...
That 3 ft putt for Harrington took me back 15 years to the 3-footer to win the Open at Carnoustie. A few demons swirled around him on that back 9 but
@padraig_h
swatted them away with that 30+ foot putt on 15, the 6ft par save on 17 & then that wee one on 18. A major winner again
…Shane Lowry finishes 12th in Valspar. Rarely get credit for his consistency. This year, 6 tournaments played, 5 top 15’s, one of those a near miss 2nd at the Honda & worst place a 24th in Dubai. Since the 2020 Irish Open, 36 tournaments, 14 top 15 finishes, just 4 missed cuts…
Tone deaf PGA Tour social media Dept on top of their game again. Nicolai is yelling because he wants the people 200+ yards away to actually hear him rather than just pay lip service to the requirement to shout fore. This is how you help prevent a potentially life changing injury.
So here’s the thing about
@leona_maguire
. You don’t dominate amateur world golf for nearly 3 years without having what we’ve seen for the last 2 days. In her rookie season she’s lying 8th the LPGA order of merit. This is just who she is & what she’s doing, she expects of herself.
Astonishing 2nd round 64 to follow a 65 in the first.
@leona_maguire
leads by 3 entering 3rd round of the $2.3m Meijer Classic on the LPGA. No Irish woman has ever won a title on either the LPGA or Ladies European Tour. Steadily moving towards history making territory...
When I saw this campaign, I thought ‘I’m not going to get into this. Covid restrictions are what they are’. But having found myself stopping over and over to let people pass socially-distanced in my local park, I have to say, this makes a point that is at least is worth debating.
This weekend alone we’ve had
@leona_maguire
win on LPGA Tour….
@rachaelblackmor
win a record equalling 3rd Irish Champion win on Honeysuckle &
@rhasidatadeleke
set the fastest times ever by an Irish woman at 60 & 200m…..2022 going the same way as 2021 for Irish women in sport…
No matter what happens tomorrow
@ShaneLowryGolf
&
@Power4Seamus
both tied for 2nd & one off the lead on the 2 biggest tours in the world.
@leona_maguire
starts season next week &
@McIlroyRory
is World No 8. Still January. Good times for Irish golf. It mightn’t always be this way.
Incredible team leading performance by
@leona_maguire
. Before this week she was admired for grit & consistency. Now, low-key as she can be, this is a jump to stardom & for a player who has improved progressively, often in small increments, this is a new leap in attention on her..
How brilliant & ‘tough’ is this.
@leona_maguire
joint runner-up in Lotte C’Ship. Highest finish by an Irish player on LPGA Tour & joint highest finish by an Irish woman on a major tour - in her first full season. Largest ever career cheque - $125K & Lydia Ko is a winner again👏👏
I’m absolutely numb. Just heard that Jerry Kiernan passed away...only 67..still so fit..an inspirational character & old friend. Coffee in Er Buchetto in Ranelagh with him was a philosophy lesson. Just can’t quite believe he’s gone. My deepest condolences to his family..RIP Jerry
Rory McIlroy 2nd in the world rankings; Shane Lowry 24th; Séamus Power 36th Leona Maguire 17th in the Women’s rankings. So far Ireland have had 2 top-3 finishers & 6 top tens in major golf championships this year. Four more ‘majors’ left to add a win to those, starting this week.
Hard to know how an experienced former caddy for Tiger & Freddie would think this was an acceptable intervention.Whatever about the hat thing, engaging with an opposing player who is lining up a shot & deciding to have a second go is almost as odd as Zach’s ‘nothing to see here’.
Honestly don’t think I’ve seen so many people from all ages having such smiley sport spectating fun as I saw over the last 2 days at the JP McManus Pro Am. Such pure entertainment on several levels. The concept & staging was the best of the 4 I’ve been to. Kudos to all involved.
Whatever about skill, bravery, fitness, that Irish rugby team are some band of brothers. They wrapped themselves as a unit around Conor Murray after his father’s accident and then that performance today. They are exemplars of all that’s good about team sport, on or off the pitch.
Astonishing. Third fastest in the world this year and she’s beaten Wilson who’s ranked No 2. Many layers of significance to this in a World C’Ship year. And for context
@rhasidatadeleke
is around 10-11 metres quicker over one lap running than she was last year. Elite world class.
Seamus Power in world’s top 50 for the first time after his birdie-birdie finish to claim a share of 3rd in the Sony. Now number 49. Last May he was outside top 400. World golf championship appearances await if he stays there & Top 50 at the end of March gets him to the Masters..
Congratulations
@Power4Seamus
Barbasol Championship winner on the PGA Tour. Won on the 6th hole of a play off with JT Poston. Changes everything...PGA Tour Card till end of 2022 season. Entry to FedEx, Players C’Ship, Tournament of Champions, PGA C’Ship ... oh ...and $630,000....
A year ago this week,
@Power4Seamus
was ranked 463rd in the world after finishing in a tie for 54th place in the Puntecana C’Ship. Now he’s likely to improve on his current ranking of 48 as he enters the knockout phase of the World Matchplay with his Masters place finally secure.
This is the 2nd green
@Woodbrook_Golf
this evening. My mam & dad are laid to rest over the fence about 100 yards away. This hole will be closed for good tomorrow but I’ll check in with Mam and Dad in person many times again but this was the last silent nod from this spot.
While Sarah Healy has rightfully grabbed so many headlines in Irish athletics with her double gold, it’s worth noting that Ireland’s other gold medallist Rhasidat Adeleke moved into the top ten Irish 200 metre list of all-time. She’s 15 years old.
You can keep your towering iron shots that land with sore butterfly feet….this is raw pure feel….the whip at impact…the timing of the hand action…the sound….the result from around 270-280 yards out into a narrow channel….ain’t many players who have this as a stock shot…
This is spot on & is as true to the man that is
@ShaneLowryGolf
as distinct from the sportsman. We are fortunate in Ireland to have a culture of open expression, whether by DNA or parenting & in this case grandparenting all of which are evident here in this lovely ‘mini-biopic’.
Easy to take for granted the lush success of Irish golfers over the last 15 years in which there’ve been 10 Irish victories in majors but none in the Masters. Today wasn’t a win but it was unique for me in 28 years covering majors to have 2 hot irons in the fire…a total thrill…
This is Ireland holding off Britain in the World 4x400 relays in the Bahamas and Ireland have qualified the Women’s and Mixed teams for Paris. Remarkable achievement on day one of the championship.
159...the average World ranking of the playing partners of
@ShaneLowryGolf
for the first two events since the resumption of the
@PGATOUR
(all good fellows I’m sure). The World No 22 was tied third at Hilton Head last year as well as winning the Open. Wee bit of respect required..
How did Leeds go from being often a basket case for a decade & a half with eccentric owner/management guidance, to being an example of how a Premier League club with relatively modest resources should be run - with a wholly different eccentric at the helm - this one genius level.
…Laura Davies is becoming one of my favourite golf co-commentators. She’s got an unfiltered frankness & she’s sharp on observations that add to the broadcast. Others do stats better but as a pioneer of great ball striking in women’s pro golf, her intuitive knowledge is obvious..
Have covered over 200 international sporting events. Have I enjoyed one more than 2022 European Championships? Nope. Great
@RTEsport
team of pros through all sports & a wee nod to my commentary box colleagues
@ConMurphySport
and
@DavidMatthews2
. It actually really was emotional…
A bit blown away by this young woman. Brilliantly articulate and inspiringly resilient. Just getting on with her sporting passion. Fine skilful, sensitively handled interview as well.
'I was born profoundly deaf..'
See
@RoscommonLGFA
star Aisling Hanly explain her remarkable story ahead of the
@lidl_ireland
All Ireland Post-Primary Schools Finals.
Aisling will captain Convent of Mercy Roscommon in the Senior B decider against Mercy Mounthawk, Tralee.
This is one of the reasons to love the game. A golf pal of mine Des Carbery turned 80 last March and on Wednesday shot 74 to win the Open singles in Carlow by a shot. To break your age in golf is one of the holy grail landmark achievements. To break it by 6 strokes is a wonder….
Pardon the cheesiness of this from last December’s RTE awards. From the two sides of my working life - golf & athletics - two of the very best people in Irish sport. Today Shane Lowry equalled his lowest PGA Tour round - a 63 - while Ciara Mageean shattered the Irish 1000m record
Six weeks after saying in a BBC interview at the World Snooker Championships that young players coming through ‘are so bad’ he’d have to lose an arm and a leg to drop out of the top 50.......Ronnie O’Sullivan loses to a Cork teenager. You gotta love karma...
Galway’s Ronan Mullarney ranked 1804th in the world & Dublin’s David Carey (897th) have qualified for the 150th Open at St Andrews in a fortnight. Pro golf on the lower tier tours in Europe(which they play on) can be a loss-making existence. Today they can believe in their dream.
Estimated that after last night’s historic victory on the LPGA Tour in Florida that
@leona_maguire
will move from 37th in the world, into or close to World Top 20…
Tied 6th for
@padraig_h
in Dubai ...his best finish in over 2 years (since Sept 2018). That’s also 7 cuts in a row...best run of actual cuts made since 2012...and second top 10 since coming out of a 6 month lockdown from Mar - Sept. No one ahead of him shot a better round today..
If you ever need to know how good
@DavidGillick
was over 400m. When he won gold at the European Indoor C’ships 16 years ago in B’ham, he clocked 45.52 secs. Tonight in Lievin the phenomenal Karsten Warholm stopped the stadium clock in 45.52, rounded to 45.51, a 2023 World Lead…
There’ve been well over 100 victories by Irish men on the European & PGA Tours, including 11 majors.There’s never been an Irish winner on a major tour in women’s pro golf. So it’s a big deal it is to have
@leona_maguire
in contention in an LPGA event - whatever way it turns out.
Just off the first fairway at Marco Simone, guesting with the BBC Five Live coverage as the singles are under way. Words hardly adequate to describe the atmosphere as a wall of sound recedes to silence and then the roars lift again. Golf needs this. Nothing like it in the sport…
….. Have only watched this 58 times…..brilliant… the shot… the kids celebration a simple absolute mood-changer….sound on is essential…Ms. Fitz is Kathleen Fitzpatrick in a yard ar Holy Trinity School, Washington DC…..
What I love about this….is that it’s Friday not Sunday…..but it felt like Sunday……and it felt like more than trying to make a cut. There’s a sound from Irish Open crowds - somewhere between raucous & reverent & then there’s passion of the player as well. Nice one to witness…
Had the pleasure introducing these world class Irish sporting legends at the RTE Sports Awards in 2019…..fair chance they’ll bump into each other at the 2022 version….
Yesterday
@leona_maguire
shot the best final round of the Women’s Open at Muirfield to finish tied 4th - while
@ciaramageean
took a brilliant Commonwealth silver at 1500 metres & a pretty epic win for Kilkenny in the All Ireland Camogie final. Helluva day for Irish women’s sport.
Birdie-birdie finish for James Sugrue to make the cut at the Dutch Open….first European main tour cut as a pro almost a year after making the cut at the Irish Open as an amateur…
Before last month, Shane Lowry had just one PGA Tour top ten since his Open win in Portrush. Now he’s had two in five weeks with his best ever Masters performance in between. Nice to see some form and confidence in his game and especially on the greens...Tied 9th in Harbour Town.
Noting how many are lamenting this being a Sunday stroll - even some from Ireland. There weren’t many Irish complainants about the back 9 stroll in Portrush. I’m guessing many of the 126 million people in Japan are feeling like we did then. They’ve never had a men’s major winner.
What a morning for Europe and what a debut for
@leona_maguire
as she partnered
@melreidgolf
to a one hole win over the Kordas....such a start ...3.5 - 0.5 after session one of foursomes....
Anyone else pissed off at how summer golf course conditions have gone to winter conditions at warp speed. Greenkeepers had a tough ‘summer’with a 4 week drought followed by an extremely wet July & August. Always acknowledge your greenkeepers. They are a club’s most precious asset
Am loathe to overstate the hard worked ability of
@leona_maguire
. We in the Irish media have witnessed her progression from before her teens & we may be biased. But if you think we laud her abilities with green glasses, watch this & listen to the commentary at 4 mins 35 secs.…
Ok. This is interesting. 63 by Leona Maguire leaves her tied for the lead at the CME Tour C’Ship where the first prize is $2,000,000…….. yep, that’s six zeros…….
One performance at National Track and Field that stood out was off the track and didn’t get enough traction. Reece Ademola is just 20 & he leapt out over 7 metres 90cm twice, setting an Irish U23 long jump record of 7.96m. He’s just 20 and 6ft 9in. Think he’s going to be a star.
Getting out the calculator here... it’s 2 world championship gold, 2 European Gold, 2 European silver, 3 European bronze, I World C’Ship bronze & of course 1 Olympic bronze for these 3 ‘random’ faces in the ‘crowd’ in Santry last night...and none of them are even nearly 50....😀
This is awful ill-researched convenient click-bait guff.
@MCampbellgolf
won 6 European Tour titles incl. Irish & European Opens & was 3rd in the 1995 Open at St Andrews, before winning the ‘05 US Open.
@GolfDigest
has a global audience and needs to remove those PGA Tour blinkers.
My 9th Olympics - ten if I include working on the home team in 1984. There’s never been one like Tokyo for obvious reasons and yet it was still utterly compelling - an experience without parallel for me. To my RTE colleagues, I’ve never worked with a better team...thank you all..
Curious how many ‘fast twitch fibres’ in those sub 45 second 400 metre legs of
@DavidGillick
, were killed off in this noble pursuit….a 3.16 marathon for a sprinter is a helluva an achievement…..
Have a look at this. As 400 metre hurdles world champ Femke Bol ran the fastest final leg of the women’s 400m relay last night, the only other athlete faster on leg 4 than
@sharlenem229
was 400 metres silver Natalia Kaczmarek.
In her 6th race in 9 days, Sharlene clocked 49.60 😳.
I’m fortunate to have witnessed some great world events in sport. Today I wished I was in Cheltenham. The legend of a mare and her female jockey is complete. Those scenes in the parade ring. The joy in the aftermath of tragedy & the acknowledgment by all of the circumstances.
Amazing week for Amateur Champion James Sugrue. Ranked 231 in the world at the start of the week..shot 77 in first qualifying round...4 of his 6 matches went to the final hole or sudden death..lost a 5 hole lead in the final but was never behind..serious cojones. Fairytale stuff.
Watching the golf ....and distracted by the fact that there are spectators in Sawgrass ...and all the golfers have neat hair cuts....and it’s 23 degrees and sunny...feel like I’m dreaming or hallucinating...
This is pretty amazing.
@rhasidatadeleke
smashing an already superb Irish indoor 400m record which has stood for 21 years & moving to No 1 in the world rankings at 400 just as she is no 1 in the 200. Both times are quicker than she has run outdoors. She is now elite world class..
What McIlroy is being asked to do - sometimes by his own initiative - in words and deeds in defending the PGA Tour from the presence of LIV in golf pales by comparison to his actual actions with club in hand. That was a performance & finale that must have made Greg Norman groan…
…a 36 year old mammy turns up for the parents race at her son‘s school sports….nothing to see here apart from the 3 Olympic & 10 world championships gold medals….oh & she’s the reigning world champion over 100m…..
Pretty normal for this to happen in Jamaica I’d have thought…
There are at least 350 Irish athletics fans here in Budapest - by far the greatest presence of flags & voices I’ve heard in a stadium since my first major c’ships in ‘88. They sound like 3,500 & Irish athletes have referenced the difference they’ve made & have mightily delivered.
Golf club social environments are hard to ‘break the shell off’. New members can be lost in a year if this fact of club life is not embraced by all. So when you see a new face, just say ‘hi’ or at least smile & make them feel welcome so they can believe this is a ‘friendly club’.
If you missed the RTE radio documentary on Shane Lowry’s Open Championship victory. We hope you like the sounds and atmosphere and recollections especially from the man himself. Here it is:
Athletics is a sport that often has more bad than good days. This is why so many individual sports people develop a bond with fellow competitors. Barshim & Tamberi sharing the Olympic high jump title was a pinnacle moment of that kind. This precious image speaks to that as well..
More than disregard....its disrespect for the athlete ...and also the event which is by far Ireland’s most successful athletic global championship discipline in the last 20 years....
Ok. Last night it came down to watching either the ‘
money-grab ‘Tour Championship (which used to be a good tournament & is now one step removed from an ‘egg on spoon’ handicap race) & the Solheim Cup. I’ve enjoyed 2 of the best golf days on TV of the year. What was I watching?
Stunning duel. 66 in the final round & only came up short in what was virtually a Matchplay game with the World No 4.
@leona_maguire
’s 2nd runner up finish of the season & she’s only lost out to 2 of the greats of the game right now, Lydia Ko in Hawaii & now Nelly Korda.
Ireland won 5 medals at the the European Cross Country Championships today in Turin. And two other top 5’s in individual races. An Irish distance running revival has been trending since the 2019 c’ships. It has a broad base & is potentially very significant. Roll on Euro Indoors.
@GolfDigest
It’s not even the greatest meeting of land and sea on that coastline….that’d be down the road at Cypress Point. And really you should travel more before making such absolute statements. Try this for a candidate - Old Head of Kinsale….uncontaminated by real estate for a start….
This is the ‘Himalayas’ putting course designed by
@padraig_h
which is ready for seeding when spring comes round. It’s massive & magnificent. It’s in a public park in South Dublin - Marley Park - a few miles from where he grew up. When it opens next summer it will be free to all.
…and at the end of a complete rollercoaster - as high as tied 5th after 7 holes of round 3 …the emotion pours out after a week that will likely change a great deal in Aine Donegan’s world. What a player. What a character…
I love this photo which is an enduring memory from my childhood. It’s Limerick’s Neil Cusack winning the 1974 Boston Marathon in 2:13.39 - an Irishman winning a big deal international sporting event in an era when Irish success of this magnitude was very, very rare..
