Fantastic interview. Officially declaring myself a LaManga head (LaManiac?)
In the last two Ryder Cups, @DodoMolinari has proven a valuable weapon for the European side, leveraging his analytical expertise to advise on decisions ranging from captain’s picks to optimal pairings. After a 15-13 Team Europe victory at Bethpage , @JosephLaMagna caught up

This shot was the perfect encapsulation. He hit what at most Masters would be the iconic shot of the tournament. The entire time it’s in the air he thinks he screwed it up. And this was only his, like, 4th best shot that day.

⬇️ Short torso because you want to stay down into the shot, and avoid extending you’re entire body too soon (early extension)

⬆️ Long legs because you want to push up off the ground for more power.

“Long legs, short torso” It’s an awesome swing thought from Jon Rahm’s longtime coach, Dave Phillips, that I think of often.

I don't think I've ever seen a clubface held off that much. It looks like it hasn't rotated one millimeter.

@LukeKerrDineen So, my buddies and I had this exact same conversation yesterday, no BS. Pres cup is nowhere near the RC and it 100% gives false sense of hope that what we are doing in team events is working and the right direction to go in for RC's. Spot on LKD

Right, maybe letting a loss linger for an extra year would be good!
@LukeKerrDineen I agree, and would also argue that having a Cup event every year that is supposed to be meaningful for the United States team is also detrimental to its chances of success in the Ryder Cup. It's never NOT a Cup year for elite Americans.

@LukeKerrDineen It’s also easier for Europe to care more when it’s every 2 yrs and it’s every yr for the US

Sam Burns is a good example: Makes '22 Prez Cup, plays with Scottie three times, goes 0-2-1 Just enough there to think he'd be a good partner for Scottie in '23. Burns goes 1-2-0 (0-1 with Scottie) Makes '24 Prez Cup team, looks great Picked for '25 RC team, goes 0-1-2

U.S. Ryder Cup take I can’t prove but really believe: The Presidents Cup is a net negative—as in, not just unhelpful but actively bad—for the U.S. team. It just gives them way too many false signals about partnerships, players, overall difficulty, team culture stuff, etc

“The badge and the boys,” says Justin Rose when @LukeKerrDineen asks why he putts so well in the Ryder Cup. An all-time turn of phrase.

Maybe the stupidest thing any American has done this week is getting Tommy Fleetwood's caddie anywhere near a heated confrontation. The guy is like 6'6", a Scouse and an absolute unit. And also, it must be said, a very lovely guy.
