The good news is that come January, the top political leaders in City Hall, the City Council, and in Albany will all working to make universal child care a reality. That’s incredibly exciting and unprecedented.
Universal child care is a big lift, and it will take leaders at every level working together to make it real. As @gracerauh tells @politicony, this moment demands serious collaboration across city & state government. Read more from @madinatoure:

The sun was shining down on Dick Ravitch Way today. A joy and honor to celebrate the incredible legacy of Dick, who was a true New York civic giant.

As @GraceRauh told @C_Sommerfeldt in @NYDailyNews: “The bar shouldn’t be whether something meets the letter of the law… it’s whether this is the right way of getting a pay raise — and it’s clearly not.”

“The bar here shouldn’t be whether something meets the letter of the law in the Charter, it should be whether this is the right way of getting a pay raise, and the answer is it’s clearly not,” Citizens Union executive director @gracerauh told @NYDailyNews.
The Council's moving ahead with a bill to give local electeds pay bumps, scheduling a Dec. 16 hearing on it — even as the two pols with the most say on the matter, Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani & incoming Council Speaker Julie Menin, remain mum on the matter.

We want NYC to a leader on many fronts but not when it comes to Super PAC spending in local elections! Thank you @JCColtin @politicony for the chance to talk about the alarming explosion of big money in city races.
“We want NYC to be raising the bar always, except when it comes to super PAC spending in our mayoral election.” NYC just hit a new record for outside spending. Voters deserve elections driven by people, not billionaires. Time to curb the super PAC arms race. @JCColtin @politicony

Exciting to see this smart initiative moving forward! @5boroinstitute developed a plan for this & called it Flexible Co-Living: individual bedrooms for rent with shared kitchens & bathrooms in converted offices. It's a way to boost housing supply & make it more affordable!
BIG AM NEWS from @mihirzaveri @nytimes: The ‘New’ Solution for the N.Y.C. Housing Crisis: Single-Room Apartments “We’re trying to make housing more affordable and create more supply,” said @AhmedTigani54, the acting commissioner of the housing department. https://t.co/rVs2GNitkQ

This is the kind of innovation the housing crisis demands. Thrilled that the @5boroinstitute's Flexible Co-Living report and research helped inspire and shape this vision for shared housing and smarter use of existing buildings.

To be clear, it may be appropriate for the City Council and other elected officials to get a pay raise but this isn’t the proper way to go about it.

Fantastic news!! Congratulations @JCColtin!
Some professional news: I’m coming back to @CityAndStateNY as editor-in-chief. I was a fan of C&S when I was a college student emailing to ask for an internship, and I’m still a fan today. Excited to take the helm heading into such a crucial and interesting time in NY politics.

After @C_Sommerfeldt @NYDailyNews reported the City Council was looking to raise its pay raise before the end of the year, @CitizensUnionNY spoke out against the move, which would have violated of the City Charter. And now the City Council has dropped the plan. Results!
We sounded the alarm on this move and the City Council hit the brakes on its ill-advised and illegal plan to vote through a pay raise before the end of the year. There are other pathways to a pay raise that don’t violate the City Charter.

Proud to be part of Mayor-elect Mamdani’s Transition Committee to help make universal child care a reality in NYC!
Big news: @gracerauh, our Exec Dir tapped to serve on Mayor-elect @ZohranKMamdani's Transition Committee on Youth and Education. Child care is economic infrastructure & we’re proud to help shape this pivotal moment to strengthen NYC’s childcare system for working families.

This isn’t just bad optics. It’s actually illegal. The City Charter expressly prohibits the Council from approving pay raises after Election Day for good reason: to prevent self-interested decisions by elected officials who won’t face voters again for another 4 years.
New: The City Council is planning to vote on giving its members and other local elected officials — including the mayor — pay raises in the final days of this year’s legislative session. https://t.co/1FTwCCRz2T

Love to see this! The political stars are aligning for child care and NY is poised to do something big. Families are struggling to pay their child care bills and our economy and city are suffering as a result.
Mamdani and Hochul also discussed “a shared desire to make significant additional investments that put New York on a path to universal child care” and “committed to ongoing conversations at the senior staff level” to develop a policy for the next year.

When Dean Fuleihan was budget director under former Mayor @BilldeBlasio, he and his team held lengthy background briefings with reporters on the budget, ensuring we understood everything we weren't certain about. That dynamic did not continue under Mayor @ericadamsfornyc.

An important point from @RossBarkan’s piece in @NYMag is that Mamdani will need to run a clean government, free of corruption and self-dealing. We have the reform roadmap right here for City Hall from @CitizensUnionNY: https://t.co/q9LV7s4nUy
There is no equivalent in American history to Zohran becoming, at age 34, the next mayor of NYC. An avowed socialist has never led a city so large, nor has a Muslim — nor has someone so young and so unlikely to win as the state assemblyman from Queens. https://t.co/JiLCsDLqjd

City government needs to rethink how it hires. https://t.co/gqfQY9UJiC

How to strengthen cities’ public sector workforce? Begin with better, timelier data.
This may seem basic, but it’s actually a strong sign that Mamdani intends to bring in new talent to city government and (perhaps most importantly) make it easy to apply for city jobs.
