It's not a good look for @BarackObama to say "democracy is on the ballot" in support of Prop 50. Obvs, it seeks to prevent a permanent Republican majority in the House, and thus hold back authoritarianism. But it's a nakedly antidemocratic way to do it.

Very excited for this book by my friend (and first-ever editor, back in our student days) @Kevin_Ashton. The stories we tell define us and how we perceive the world, far more than most of us realize. This is the story of how stories evolved. https://t.co/8tFBkDp27V

Nice round-up from @glichfield of the debate over Trump's Middle East AI gambit:

The Gulf has the resources Trump needs to expand America’s AI prowess, but there’s no guarantee the Middle East will stay loyal to his cause.

People who claim AGI is imminent mean a wide range of different things by it. For Bloomberg, I write that this AGI hype is obscuring our ability to talk intelligently about the big changes that are actually coming. https://t.co/aIgIf4GyWU

The term “artificial general intelligence” is being bandied about by some of tech’s smartest people, but nobody knows what it really means.

Right now most attention is on the damage. But I don't think it's too early to start thinking about what could rise from the ashes. One day—maybe a long way off—people will realize they want a functioning government and better ways of having a say in it. https://t.co/0nhFIwNYQt

If I’m reading this right, the headline everyone should be writing but nobody has is: “Trump Decrees That There Are No Transgender People Any More” https://t.co/tu6nBB2gGz

With Trump's inauguration just days away, I took a look at something the incoming administration ought to love: a report from the Niskanen Center on how to make the US government less bureaucratic, slow-moving, crufty, and generally incapable. https://t.co/FPyxaJG1JV

Newsrooms could regain conservative audiences in 2025. There are things they could try, and publications doing this successfully. But they mostly won't. This is my gloomy prediction for @NiemanLab this year. The reasons are cultural. https://t.co/9gsLUI1q7H

I wrote about how "mainstream" media has made a similar mistake in covering the UnitedHealthcare CEO murder as in covering Trump, which is part of the reason it's becoming less mainstream to a lot of America https://t.co/sSzGmz5jUR

US bike sales never recovered after the recession. To figure out why, a new citizen put an American tradition to the test.

This is an excellent analysis. And if you wrote it at 1am even more so
A big part of why the Democrats will never “build their own Joe Rogan” is bc democrats want a media ecosystem that they can control and is loyal to the Democratic establishment. Leftists content creators are at odds with that
