👋 Today is my first day
@Microsoft
! Certainly, it does feel weird to land on a new job during the pandemic, as I am here at home with no official equipment shipped yet but I'm excited to join the wonderful people! 🦝
And my goal is to put M (back) to FAANG and I'm serious 😉
Wow wow, this is the most impressive way to use VS Code I’ve ever seen! This Japanese author writes a novel and preview in vertical text layout, which is how novels are typically printed in Japan, using CSS (`writing-mode: vertical-rl;`). Version control with git too 🤯
[🍒 git cherry-pick] You want to pick a specific commit or two? Use `git cherry-pick`. You can get the hash of the commits with `git log`! (Okay, I failed to put a cat-pun this time but oh well 🐱 meow.)

Although I’m not traveling for a while (phew!) I created the travel packing checklist for developer advocates & conference speakers. (Well, this is basically my list and this is why there’s no shaver listed!)
#DevRelLife
[🆕 Revised] Thank you all for your help me! Algorithm is hard!
✏️ Rewrite O(n^2) section
🧮 New example may be more complicated, but this time, the time complexity should be really O(n^2), not O(n*m)
Sorry for the confusion! I stick with a flat array example 🙇♀️
🥞 Stack & Queue
I guess the "array in JS" examples would upset some of you, especially because the use of `Array.prototype.shift()` is supposed to be slower. The time complexity of dequeue operation should be O(1), however, JS's shift() is O(n), apparently.
[📦 New doodle 🐱] Array & Linked List - described with cats in a box.
🚃 Array: Cats in a partitioned box
🔗 LinkedList: A cat in a box connected to another cat in a box
(No affiliation with Amazon. Cats just love their boxes. Also, happy birthday to my cat, Leia!)
#⃣ Hash table
I tried to explain it with a box of cats (as an array) again. The hash function can be anything you define. In the example, I simply used a sum of ASCII code. e.g. "bob": 98+101+98=307
In JS, you may want to use `str.charCodeAt()` instead.
We reached a major milestone in our relationship with our Japanese customers. We now we have a new place to collaborate: Say hello to our new Tokyo office.
🎈 2 years at Slack! (well, the anniversary was yesterday but I was at
#io19
!)
It has been interesting two years, a lot happened-- sometimes exciting, sometimes not. But I'm seeing something far better this year ✨
I really enjoyed watching
#WomenOfReact
😍
And these are my React hooks 😝 I was crocheting the face mask (which still needs a lining) but missed a lot of stitches because great talks took my attentions!
It's after midnight in Japan and Slack is trending in Tokyo on Twitter... People, go to bed!
こんな時間に Slack 落ちたツイートが日本でトレンドに入っているのは働き方改革に反しているので、みなさんもう今日は寝ましょう!
🙇♀️
Hi Japanese-speaking devs, it's is my 100th attempt to tell you that people here don't use the acronym SNS to talk about social media. We think of Amazon SNS.
多分100回くらい言ってますが SNSって言われても英語圏の人には意味が通じないので social media って言ってくれると嬉しいです
Katie Bouman at TEDx in 2016:
Cuz "you can't always get what you want but if you try sometimes you might find you get what you need", her team connect telescopes around the world to create computational telescope to achieve rendering the blackhole img.
I just noticed Google added the better pronunciation guide for word search in SeRP. This is super helpful for people like me, whose primary language isn't English. You can slow it down and practice with a microphone. It corrects me when I'm wrong too 💖
👋 Bye to Internet Explorer 11 & legacy non-Chromium Edge.
🗓 Nov 30, 2020: MS Teams stop supporting IE11
🗓 Mar 9, 2021: Edge Legacy EOL
🗓 Aug 17, 2021: M365 stops supporting IE11
🇯🇵 Hi Japanese gov't, please upgrade the e-tax site which reportedly only supports IE11 🙇♀️
Do you actually read API docs, if they are written entirely with doodles (with cats) and maybe even a coloring book? 🖌️ I hope your answer is hell yes, cuz I'm drafting my ideas.
It's pretty cool Taiwan's digital minister sent a PR to the Tokyo gov't Covid19 website. I peeked at her GitHub & I'm like 🤩
Then I looked her up on Wikipedia. OMG, she's a Perl6 contributor & is the first transgender official in the cabinet! Super rad🤯
I just remembered about 11 years ago, the time companies like Apple, HP, and a few others were bidding to buy Palm inc.
We, Palm employees, wanted Facebook to buy us so we could rename the company name to Facepalm.
🤦♀️
Sigh. I have this Monday after holiday brain. I thought I launched Slack on my phone but it was Google Photos.
I tried again. Now I have Podcasts app. I need more caffeine ☕
Contributing to open-source projects is not only about coding. Editing the docs counts, and it is actually a huge deal.
I often pair the tutorials I write & the demo code on GitHub. And I just merged a PR from a reader that improved my tutorial. I am so grateful.😍
[🎄Binary Heap] Get your priorities straight!
I wish I could make the binary trees into banana trees 🍌 but it just didn't make sense so I just drew with 🍡. It is getting harder to make

🍻 Mar: ran the 1st virtual meetup
🍻 Apr: ran an improved virtual meetup
🍺 May: the # of attendees declined
💤 Jun: canceled
💤 Jul: canceled
💀 Aug: postpone indefinitely. People refuse to talk to a screen after work
It seems a common pattern for meetup organizers...
So peaceful here.
I'm recalling my 16.5 years in SF / Silicon Valley, where I was trying too hard and exhausted myself. Now the feelings are slowly dissolving away in the ocean.
It was exactly a year ago in San Francisco.
I remember I totally freaked out when I woke up in the morning. It was so dark and the sun was invisible.
I thought it was the end of the world but went out to buy 🥖. I guess Acme Bread was what I wanted for the last meal.

and yes, Teams Toolkit just went GA 🎉🙌
📄 Here's my blog that covers what's new:
🎞 Also, join me in the breakout session in a few hours!
Here's mine.
You want to stay relevant as a software developer for the next 10 years?
3 major things you should focus on:
🧘♀️ Flexibility, cuz tech trends change (I did jQuery & AJAX 10y ago)
🐱 Curiosity. Learn constantly!
❤️ Empathy. Don't be a jerk!
🙌 Don't limit yourself 😉
Japanese language has a variety of onomatopoeia, yet people keep creating new ones all the time. My coworker Rieko (who doesn't tweet) is genius for describing the Slack notification sound as スッコココ.
It's my first time getting my Microsoft business cards, only because I'm traveling to Tokyo soon. Business card exchanging is like a ritual in Japan so I'm trying to be proper 👔
I am occasionally asked:
🧑🎓 "I want to learn GitHub. Where is the easiest tutorial I can follow?"
Well, there is a one-page GitHub intro with my doodle, as a part of

It has been 15 years since I moved to San Francisco! The city has changed so much and I do miss the nicer & safer version of the city. Also, my nice $1400 1bdrm.
Once I felt this was the home but now I feel I'm barely surviving. I've got more 💰in bank but life is downgraded.
Well, conferences have been canceled and I've lost a chance to give this silly new talk with lots of cat pics and puns so I just tweet the content little by little when I feel like it-
@shanselman
I'm amused how everybody calculate differently. I still used the method I first learned as a kid so I always have to visualize this in my head:
My brain is 🤯🤯🤯 after taking this all-day workshop called "Four Semesters of CS in Six Hours" by
@holtbt
. I am a self-taught engineer with no CS degree, so taking the in-person class was such a great experience! Thank you, Brian!!!
I knew Japanese is the hardest language for English speakers to master. The opposite is true too, so don't disrespect / mock me & fellow native Japanese speakers for not speaking perfect English.
Ha, it's been already 6 years since I got internet-famous on
@Flickr
accidentally. (But I still don't know how to market myself on newer social media like the younger peeps out there are good at! 😬)
