Seems Twitter's transformation to a full hate amplification platform is complete. There are some pretty awesome people here. I won't be returning.

Probably the biggest difference between Tony Stark and Phony Stark is that, at the end of the movies, Tony realized that tech can't solve people problems.

One of my communities seems to be very happy moving to Mastodon. ( https://t.co/vbNwtDCrcV, to be exact.) I'm wondering where the other communities will go.

Quick reminder: Unless you've set up end-to-end encryption, direct messages should never be considered private messages. This is even more true of Mastodon where non-employees are admins.
Mastadon DMs are not secure. Admins with backend access can read them. Yes, the same is true for Twitter but a random twitter employee couldnโt care less about DMs on science twitter. On the other hand, a Mastadon admin might be part of your immediate professional network.

When Google Plus went down, I didn't really increase my time on other social media sites to compensate. I eventually found communities elsewhere, and kept in touch with those I was closest to. But going to another site didn't fix anything. No site can replace the shut down one.

@Foone Right now a disk is filling up on a server somewhere in some data center that a person who has just been laid off has been manually clearing every few days and when that disk fills up Twitter will go down.

Many are using this crisis to claim that public health measures have somehow impacted our immunity - THIS IS NOT A THING. The public health measures we took in the last few years only helped reduce the burden of illness and did not in fact cause this crisis. (8/8)

"Half the ads and twice as relevant for $8/mo" So you're extorting me, but not actually delivering on what free ad blockers deliver... all while doubling down on selling my info?

Decompress with mindless, non-productive, non-satisfying activities for 2 hours. Clean/maintain your body for 1 hour. Lay in bed trying to sleep for 3 hours. Sleep for 5 hours. 2/2

The Propaganda: Sleep for 8 hours. Work for 8 hours. Play for 8 hours. Reality: Works for 8 hours. Sit within 10 minutes of your desk for 1 hour while eating (not paid). Commute for 2 hours. Cook for 30 minutes. Clean for 1h30 minutes. 1/2

If a billionaire makes a bad business decision, they don't skip a meal. If I make a bad business decision, I could be homeless. Tell me again who has more skin in the game.

This is pretty shocking. Well worth the read.
Recently I learned about a man who has trained 1,000+ people to block wind and solar projects. I read through all his training materials, presentations, and seminars. Here's what I learned about him and how his students plan to "win the war on clean energy." ๐งต

I'm almost tempted to disable my adblocker on Twitter so that I can start blocking ads manually again...

"Be a tourist in your own city." It has a 3 storey mural of The Candy Bomber ( https://t.co/jXvKDyE5qr ), because he grew up here. It's a chilling piece of Cold War history. One of those feel-good stories that should have never been necessary.

"Be a tourist in your own city." My city has a sculpture of the Space Shuttle despite being very far from the Space Coast. (Full stack, shortly after launch; not just the orbiter.) It earned that sculpture, because the people who were the loudest before STS-51-L lived here.
