Who cares? Adult life isn't high school or college. Point of fact: neither of these people peaked in high school or college. There are all kinds of intelligent ways to think about politics. This isn't one of them.

I genuinely believe that the Trump administration fails to grasp that they cannot bluster and bully their way into getting creditors to loan money at lower rates of interest than those creditors want to.
One problem is that mortgage rates aren't based off the Fed's rate but the ~10y Treasury, which is being driven by uncertainty, Trump's deficits and his moron risk premium. The Fed's cuts had a small dent in mortgages in 2024 but reversed once Trump won. Unlikely to move now.

This has cemented the fact that LA is run by Mayor NIMBY. This vote tells you everything about LA politics: even “progressives” will side with entrenched homeowners over renters, climate, and affordability. Mayor Bass even spent time trying to get others to veto this bill.🧵.

Which is why the “AI is all cheating BS” is the wrong approach. It actually is very useful for certain tasks. You want to get up to speed on a well-documented topic quickly? It’s pretty good at that. But it’s also why the “AI will destroy employment” take is wrong too.

Right. And this shows what AI can be good for right now and what it can’t. Boeing would never have AI replace all of its engineers. But if the assignment is something like “tell me the basics of how airplanes fly” plus some 10th grade level follow-ups, it’s pretty good at that.
I think it's easy to overrate the significance of the fact that AI systems beat a fair fraction of humans on some tasks. It underrates the prevalence of deference, division of labour, and mimicry of real understanding (e.g. at school). Most decisions are made by or deferred to.

Some days I feel like I'm the only one who's pro-all of it on electricity. Solar, wind, nuclear, natural gas, all of it. And then I remember "oh yeah, this is one of those areas where there's a silent majority also in favor of 'all-of-the-above."

Two important facts about electricity prices. 1) They're up 38% over the last five years after holding flat for a decade. That's a big problem!.2) They vary a lot from state-to-state. It should be an explicit political goal to make electricity so abundant that it's super cheap.

I can't wait to see a dairy business make $$$$ by saying "we don't do this woke pasteurization crap, we sell RAW MILK!!. but we make sure it doesn't make you sick by rapidly heating it up to 161 degrees for 15 seconds and then rapidly cooling it back down.".

Every time I point out how great Five-Over-One’s are, someone has some sort of aesthetic objection. They all look better than this street by a mile. If this street turned into all 5-over-1s, it would be a huge improvement on basically every metric other than parking/traffic.
This is the "character of the neighborhood" that you're paying $5k in rent to protect. The apex of urban design, really. It shall never change from here.

I love some of the parochial insults you hear in different places. In west Michigan, people from a Dutch background say “if you ain’t Dutch, you ain’t much.” In VT, people with a long history here refer to newcomers as “flatlanders.”. What are some other bespoke local put downs?.
