There’s a new twist on one of the strangest supernova remnants in the galaxy, known as 3C 397. (1/n)

Experimenting with the @AnthropicAI Claude Code command line beta. In some ways, it is a natural extension of familiar chat LLM interfaces. In others, it offers a brief glimpse of more agentic AIs to come -- building and running code and analyzing results largely on its own.

Fisher was the last survivor of the Wolf prize winning group (along with Ken Wilson and Leo Kadanoff) who had done fundamental work on the renormalization group. It's a beautiful and insightful lecture (". this is the picture I carry around from Wilson. ").

Ethan has another great story on the strange supernova remnant SN 1181 (aka Pa 30). It's possible it is the product of an ONe white dwarf (WD) merging with a CO WD. My former PhD student Rahul Kashyap led a pioneering simulation of these for his thesis.

The mystery of the Milky Way’s most bizarre supernova. Back in 1181, a "guest star" appeared in the constellation of Cassiopeia. We're only now figuring out the origin (and remnant) of the Milky Way's most unusual supernova.

Massachusetts has made a big step towards reducing inequality across the Commonwealth by making college tuition and mandatory fees free for high need students — including nearly a quarter of current @UMassD current students.

Roulette wheels back then had a small tilt, which produced a non-uniform probability distribution for the ball. The Cabal exploited this small tilt by building custom-made computers into platform shoes. @StartsWithABang tells the story here:

As described in the delightful book “The Eudaemonic Pie” and Gleick’s “Chaos,” .in the 70s, the “Chaos Cabal” at UC Santa Cruz undertook computer simulations similar to these, as well as experiments.

What is physics if not understanding how complex natural systems work? Hopfield’s early papers are immediately intelligible to any physicist, and are deeply rooted in statistical mechanics, owing to his training as a condensed matter physicist.

Seen a lot of takes about the physics Nobel this year, so as someone who's been in AI4Physics research for a while at this point, here is mine: Hopfield Neural Networks at least are very much physics! Thread, generally derived from Amit et al 1987 (.

In the mid-1800s, the engineering marvel of using steam to complete mechanical work gave rise to a new science: thermodynamics. Today, the field is charging into the quantum realm. Listen to this week’s episode of “The Joy of Why” with co-host @stevenstrogatz.

It's a shame that we've enshrined a practice in which all too often people aren't aware of the strength of the community supporting them. When appropriate, I've shared letters with the advisees, as other mentors including Leo Kadanoff once did for me. It can be a world changer.
