Extreme Nuclear Transients (ENTs) are the most energetic transients yet discovered! . Being as bright as 100 normal supernovae, they are visible out to redshift~1, when the universe was half its current age. They evolve so slowly that @UHIfA PhD. Jason Hinkle spent most of his

As a public employee, I try to keep politics out of my professional life. Sadly, @UHawaii’s Faculty Union doesn’t share that view. The article is blatantly partisan and the juxtaposition between the title and the first sentence is funnier than any @TheOnion article I have read

Please join me in congratulating @UHIfA graduate, Jason Hinkle!!!. 13 first author papers, 5 student papers he co-advised (more coming), and FINNEST future investigator. Jason has accepted an Einstein Fellowship to @AstroIllinois to continue his work on nuclear transients.

AAS actively violates is own code of ethics too even after it is pointed out to them for years. Seems to be some cross discipline problems.

I forgot. We do have a statement of ethics in the ASA. Not that it's one much good. I really appreciated Joachim Savelsberg's statement suggesting the ASA had violated its own code of ethics last year.

It's rare for a grad student paper to spark a new subfield—but this collab between @UHIfA’s Colby Haggerty and the Shappee transient group might do just that, solving key mysteries in supernovae & kilonovae! Check it out!.In it, Dhvanil Desai @dhvanil12299

Usually, they're the villains in movies. Hunger Games, 1984, A Clockwork Orange, . Sometimes sociologists and scientists combine to be the villains like in Minority Report. ;-).

I'll be honest, I love movies when they call academics in to help with some emergency. The Core. Timeline. Jurassic Park. (Okay, lots of Crichton.) Thought experiment: what would the plot/disaster have to be to call in a sociologist? AKA what is our utility? Multiple!.

OK, Grok is amazing. I am a fanboy, but just look at this context to a reference and a video (my pinned tweet, purposely selected to have almost no context in the tweet).

When giving career advice to undergrads or 1st year grads I often think of this Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin quote:."Do not undertake a scientific career in quest of fame or money. There are easier and better ways to reach them. Undertake it only if nothing else will satisfy you; for

I am not taking a side, but this table is wrong. Highways often have 4 lanes each way in cities in US. Safe following distance is 3 seconds. It says maximum capacity so cars can have 5 people max. (Doesn't actually matter what speed limit is.) car on freeway 48,000 people/hour.

this is a lie. the max throughput on the Tesla Tunnel is ~4,000 passengers/hr, and in reality probably is closer to 2,000. meanwhile the Lexington Avenue line of the NYC Subway can hit over 100k passengers/hr. cars are simply an inefficient way to move many people

This work was done with the decade-long ASAS-SN light curves. In 12 years LSST will have 10-year light curves pushing to z~4 for 10^8 Msun BHs and ASAS-SN's 25-year baseline would probe monster BHs in the local universe and 10^9 <Msun BHs to z~2 (under many assumptions).
