Things I knowingly take for granted: Canada’s healthcare system.
In the 9 months my wife has been pregnant, the only thing we’ve had to pay for is a $50 vaccine.
We are so fortunate that wealth doesn’t equate to access to healthcare. This should be a universal right.

Growing up in Vancouver, the name “Georgia Straight” meant so much. It was different. It was the beating heart of Vancouver’s culture.
I’m excited to announce that
@OverstoryMedia
has acquired
@GeorgiaStraight
in an effort to revitalize local arts and culture coverage.
Pretty wild moment tonight watching/listening to
@IceSinghHNIC
calling his first NHL game (in English).
Imagine all the kids growing up watching him, thinking “that guy looks like me, maybe I could do that one day.”
This is how dreams are made, how lives change. What a step.
Regardless of your political views, seeing the Prime Minister walking in a Pride parade says a lot about a country’s values and acceptance. This is Canada, where everyone and anyone is welcome! ❤️🇨🇦

Some personal news...
After an incredible 7.5 years, it’s time for me to step down as Editor-in-Chief of Daily Hive. I’ll be leaving later this month.
Thank you all so much for your support during this journey. This has been a role of a lifetime.
Yesterday, got to take part in what’s now one of my favourite memories of the year - a “First Skate” with new Canadians, many of whom are refugees who just came here as little as a couple weeks ago.
What a milestone and moment in our history:
PM Trudeau has announced the nomination of Mahmud Jamal to the Supreme Court of Canada.
An Ismaili Muslim, Jamal is the first person of colour nominated to the

New from PM Trudeau:
Canada is banning assault-style firearms.
Effective immediately, "it is no longer permitted to buy, sell, transport, import, or use military-grade assault weapons in this country."

Media is broken. A struggle to balance thoughtful reporting with making money, the latter almost always winning.
The industry needs long-term thinking, along with a commitment to high-quality journalism and storytelling.
Enough is enough, let’s fix this…
My grandpa battled Parkinson’s for so much of his life. It’s such a terrible disease.
I’m so proud and in absolute awe of Michael J Fox. He’s fighting this with courage and determination, and has already raised $1.5B+ for Parkinson’s research. He’s a true hero.
Calling today’s announcement between the feds and Google on Bill C-18 a “huge win” for Canadian news outlets is great spin.
Let’s remember:
Feds promised:
• $230M+ annually from Google and Meta
Feds delivered:
• $100M from Google
• Meta leaving news in Canada and any…
Losing so much respect for people I know travelling outside their home towns all in the name of fun.
It's not cool. You're being selfish and idiotic.
I will remember you.

I miss my family. I miss my friends. My mental health has taken a beating.
But I keep reminding myself that I’m not alone. That everyone is in this hell together, no matter how apart we all are. And that we must have hope that tomorrow will be better than today.

taxi story. Mid-ride driver told us machine didn’t work, asked us how we were paying. After saying we didn’t have enough cash to cover, he tried to kick us out. He then told us to carry cash next time. Because, you know, 2018.

This is terrible. This is why our bar for leadership in Canadian politics is so damn low.

People are such jerks. Sure, the piercing sound of the alert scared me. But it was the reason police found the murdered 11-year-old girl and her killer.
Rethink your life if you're complaining about a push notification telling you someone's child is missing and in danger.
Our communications bureau is receiving numerous calls to 9-1-1, complaining about the late hour of the Amber Alert. As a direct result of someone receiving the alert, we were able to locate the suspect & his vehicle. The system works. Thank you to all those that called with tips.
I hate to see people lose their jobs, and I really hope they get hired somewhere else... but damn is it nice to finally see the Trump brand shutting down in Vancouver!

Over a year ago, I met
@ty_olsen
who pitched the idea of starting a local news outlet in the Fraser Valley, one of BC's largest & most diverse regions.
The pitch? Local journalism has suffered, it's a news desert, we need to rejuvenate it.
A year later & we're well on our way!
You’ll get another weekend, you’ll get another summer. But many will not.
Don’t be selfish. Don’t be stupid. Don’t think this won’t affect you.
Be safe, wear a mask, and keep your circles small.
It’s literally in our control to end this sooner than later.
After doing such a good job earlier this year, being regarded as world leaders in the fight against covid... BC has completely wet the bed.
It's such a sad state we're in. The power is completely in our hands, if 100% of us commit to this. It's not too late to flip the curve.
🚨 HOT OFF THE PRESS...

We heard from SO many readers who said they relied on their print edition to tell them what was happening. Really proud of our team for pulling this off so quickly.
Today's decision to ban assault-style weapons in Canada is one of the best decisions the government has made.
They are literally made to kill as many people as quickly as possible.
No civilian needs a military-grade weapon. Ever.
One step closer to a safer society.

Every time I take a taxi in BC I’m reminded how archaic our system is. The service is poor, the drivers don’t care, overall terrible experience. How long do we have to wait for this to change?

50 new cases in the past day should be a big wake up call to British Columbians.
We can do better. We have done better. We need to do better.

RIP to a pioneer in East African-Indian cuisine, Mrs Noorbanu Nimji. There’s isn’t an Ismaili household without her cookbooks. Her legacy will live on for generations to come ❤️
It's surprising how surprised people in BC are at the new measures today.
Things got better, restrictions slowly lifted, and people relaxed.
Now things are bad with record high cases, so the restrictions are getting harsher.
This is really simple and entirely in our control.
@PascaleStOnge_
Bad legislation your government passed and continues to support has caused this.

Canadians need to have a talk with one another and ask - is this who we are? A country that STONES its leader?
This might be the minority, but where’s the majority saying this is not okay.
