@9mm_smg Exactly. 20 years after graduating went back to my hometown. Handful of whites, two handfuls of Hispanics, and a dump truck of blacks which was an almost all white town 20 years ago. No longer what I knew it no longer has anything for me. No town left.

This is a bit silly. 5 million is at best a W.A.G. and must mean globally. US funded research has a much better track record than that. Plus if you want breakthroughs, you have to tolerate a lot of failures. Not to say there is a fair amount of slop, even in the US, but.....
Academic science cranks out ~5 million papers a year ~1 million will never be cited ~2 million will get fewer than 10 citations The biggest problem in science isn’t funding cuts it’s that we’re drowning in scientific slop

A point worth making: Suppose a policy would make everyone worse off but increase fairness. An economist would typically say we shouldn’t do it, and they may be right. But it is important to recognize that even that is a value judgment and not merely technical expertise.
