today I canvassed a guy who kinda liked Bernie but didnt wanna register as Dem & was still sad Warren dropped out. I asked him what he liked about Warren and by the end of the convo he was willing to re-register online right in front of me and commit to voting for Bernie 🥰
lol honey the union railroad workers BACKED UP THE TRAIN when they saw picketers on the tracks. good luck making cookies without the flour and sugar they were gonna deliver!
#NabiscoStrike
went in for covid test today. PA saw my Bernie shirt and showed me his BLM pin. we talked about M4A & kidnappings in Portland. I asked if he was union, he said he was trying to get coworkers to join a physicians union. I invited him to a DSA labor training and he said yes 🤩😭
Chicago Public Schools will start the year with all students learning remotely, per source. It comes as the teachers union called a House or Delegates meeting, appearing to threaten job action if forced to return to the classroom.
@WGNNews
We've all seen it: a rich person not paying taxes.
It's frustrating, especially when you've paid yours — complaints about people artificially creating poverty and then criminalizing its victims are among the most common we get.

Despite the improvements Democrats secured to better protect workers:
I am voting against USMCA.
Because it doesn't address climate change, the greatest threat facing our planet.
the cool thing about being a socialist is that you commit to fighting for justice for the working class forever, so no matter what happens you basically have your whole life figured out!!
took my union sign to a BLM protest last week. a young person sheepishly asked me what a union was. I said "a union is when coworkers try to improve their working conditions. they go to the boss and say hey we're not going to cooperate until things change."
she said, "oh badass!"
I don't know who needs to hear this, but it's not "union-busting" (lol) to vote no on a TA, encourage your coworkers to vote no, or criticize union leadership 👍
Berners in OR & WA:
wanna travel to Iowa for Bernie but not sure you can afford it?
I'll be there Jan 17-21 over MLK weekend. if you'd like to join me, I can get at least partial (maybe full) funding for your airfare, plus housing is covered. it'll be an AWESOME trip! lmk ASAP!
my disabled mom was an activist before Twitter existed. here's what she did:
- 1:1 calls
- phone/text bank
- cold contact press and community groups
- make graphics & agitprop
- order supplies
- hold a planning meeting
- give a presentation on strategy/history

: it's hard to believe politicians' promises.
me: Bernie has a very long record of fighting for wages and health care in congress and the senate
her: I have my jaw open right now. I had no idea he was even in congress. they never talk about that...
one of my most pessimistic comrades heard about the
@SBWorkersUnited
wave in Portland and texted me: "We can actually win. That’s what this has shown. Our generation can take the labor movement into power. Idk if we’ll be able to, but the chance is really, actually there." 😭✊️
just wanna say NOT ALL STATES have closed primaries! meaning in many places you DONT have to register as a Dem!!! make sure you know what the rule is for the state you're canvassing in
I'm so excited to announce I'm running for President of my union,
@pccffap
!
I'm joined by other dedicated organizers on the Unite for a Future slate who are committed to organizing to fight and win a better future for us & our students ✊❤️

me: is there any candidate you're thinking of supporting?
83 yr old Iowan: *chuckles* well it's a little early for that, isn't it?
me: sure I suppose, so you're undecided?
Iowan: I like Bernie, I might vote for him if he decides to run, only time will tell 🤷♀️
I love Portland DSA and all the amazing work we have done to build the socialist movement. I am proud of working to make our chapter welcoming, democratic, and tolerant of dissent. I applaud the decision of the convention
one of the coolest things about being a DSA member is the intergenerational socializing. now some of my closest friends are 10-20 years (or more) older than me and I learn so much from them

DSA member and UAW Local 600 retiree Ron Lare pumps up a crowd of strike supporters saying "Don't be too afraid to make mistakes. The only week I didn't make a mistake was the week I didn't do anything."
our ire should never be towards workers who choose not to strike, but it's legitimate to point out when leaders get in the way of potential strikes. many of the QTs to this tweet imply that the main/only reason we strike is to get a good contract, and that's just not true.
I'm becoming concerned that if the Teamsters settle the UPS contract without walking off the job, a lot of labor peeps are going to call it a sellout because the workers didn't go on strike.
That's a dangerous attitude to have.
check out this chapter from "Women, Race and Class." Davis argues for the socialization of housework, meaning it's done by public sector professionals who are compensated and have structural power as workers. it's the same argument for universal childcare!
My most socialist trait is that I think having house cleaners is just inherently weird and off-putting
If you're abled and can't clean your house, you clearly live in a house that's too big! Your family should handle it on their own, instead of paying some poor person pennies
the time to debate whether DSA should have a labor staffer was at the 2017, 2019, and 2021 conventions. we did debate it then, and at all three conventions we voted overwhelmingly to have one. time to stop stalling
I will be voting in favor of restoring the member's right to appear on the ballot because I do not believe the NPC provided a sufficient justification for removing them, which should be an extremely high bar
the main reason strikes are good is because they raise consciousness, create leaders, and build organization. there are huge risks to strikes and they aren't the right answer to every problem. but there's no substitute for direct conflict with the employer class
"If you're nervous about organizing, it's not about getting rid of the butterflies in your stomach. It's about getting the butterflies to fly in formation."

spoke to a Spanish speaker who had never heard of Bernie but was planning on caucusing
we talked about how all the wealth is concentrated at the top and we need someone who'll fight for the working class
voter said he'd caucus for Bernie and volunteer for his campaign :')
if you ever find yourself feeling hopeless about the future, I HIGHLY recommend coming to a
#DSAforBernie
meeting. you'd be amazed at all the cool people working hard to make the world a better place
Our campaign meeting tonight got me PUMPED!

We got trained on how to street canvass, and we got lots of new volunteer sign-ups for the next month 🌹

he says his union benefits completely paid for his cancer treatment and got his kids thru college 🥺✊️
out on the picket line at Ford Michigan Assembly talking to Shauntae and Chuck. she says she is happy to strike to fight for the raises workers deserve. he says he is striking for justice and equality and the greater good ✊️

@Robillard
@AFTunion
rank and file AFT members like me support Bernie!
he has supported us on the picket lines his whole life. he will fight for minimum $60k/year, cancel student debt, and tuition free college
DSA members, please feel welcome to reach out to me (on this app or forums) if you are unhappy with the NPC meeting last night, even and especially if you don't agree with the staff resolution that I voted for. I'm very willing to explain my reasoning and hear out other views
people often ask me, "if I'm not in a union and I can't change that right now, how can I be involved in the labor movement?"
now is a GREAT time to be thinking about that. so I wrote up my answer!
#Striketober
agreed. important to recognize that the NLRA is already weak and often barely enforced. what got this win for workers was the threat of more organizing, not a legal safety net
it must be said that this is the result of thousands of rank and file starbucks workers all across this country commiting themselves to the tireless work of organizing and standing up to the boss. no surprise this is a week after 21 stores file in a single day
if you're reading this: PLEASE make time, at least 30 minutes, every single day until next Weds, to do calls for Bernie.
you have the time. you can do it. we can win.
“If you think about the kinds of employees they have, the stereotype of people that work there seems to be true — a lot of young people, Bernie supporters, D.S.A. types,” said John Logan referring to the
@DemSocialists
this is nonsense. the workers who overwhelmingly rejected the TA actually wanted the squad to vote to prevent them from striking? no. at best the union leadership who handed members a shitty TA in the first place were on board
There seems to be a lot of confusion here about the vote yesterday. The unions wanted the progressive caucus and the Squad to vote the way they did, so they could fight in the Senate. You can disagree with that strategy but it’s the one the unions settled on.
On the
@DSAWorkingMass
labor panel yesterday, it seemed like everyone was saying EWOC (
@organizeworkers
) is great because it will help us organize the unorganized and increase union density. But I have a different view...🧵
a must-read! mad respect for LV DSA for publishing this critical reflection
✅️ endorsed candidates w/o relationship to a party-like org will inevitably become conservatized
✅️ parliamentary maneuvering is no substitute for movement-building
✅️ we need a working class party
Clarifying our position and relationship with the NV State Democratic Party two years after a slate of DSA-members were elected to the board.
TLDR: DSA shouldn’t be wasting its time or resources with the Dem Party.
@PetrieDaParrot
WE WERE ELECTED BY DELEGATES AT THE NATIONAL CONVENTION TO REPRESENT VARIOUS FACTIONS IN OUR MULTI TENDENCY ORGANIZATION, WHICH IS A SITUATION RIFE WITH CONTRADICTIONS BUT ULTIMATELY A MORE VIABLE WAY TO REVITALIZE THE MOVEMENT THAN RETREATING TO SECTS OR FOREGOING INDEPENDENT PO
Socialists in Congress should have treated this as a national emergency. Why get anyone elected if they won't even organize a backlash to gutting social programs? This degree of political impotence couldn't possibly be worth any supposed benefits from appeasing Dem leadership
last year our family dinner table got two seats smaller. we lost my mom Louise, whose heart could no longer beat on its own, and my brother-in-law Jon, who lived with pain he felt deeply but could never vocalize. I hope someday I can think of them without it hurting so bad
in membership orgs like DSA or unions, the Q isn't "are staff good or bad?"
the Q is, are members capable of doing the work that staff do? how can we help members do that work self-sufficiently? if the work must be paid to get done, how do you decide who should be paid?
you're a DSA NPC member. you're on a plane traveling to the quarterly NPC meeting. the person sitting next to you asks why you're flying to Oakland. what do you do?
a
@BCTGM
member asked me on the picket line this morning, why does DSA come out here to support us? what's in it for all of you? this is approximately what I said 👇
one of the reasons the nabisco strike is so exciting to me is that when they win a fair contract, it sets a big precedent for other workers at plants like the mondelez plant. when workers unite we all win.
how is YDSA so good at retaining new members? political development. exciting campaigns are important too, but long-haul commitment comes from a consciousness shift as the result of struggle + politics
We’ve also lost most of those members because DSA didn’t do anything meaningful to get them engaged more than simply signing up to pay dues. The recommitment drive did a good job at probably even having some of the inactive members sign up again, but we need a stronger program.
beautiful May Day at the UO solidarity encampment. truly blown away by these students' level of self organization, total commitment to the fight for a free Palestine, and understanding of worker power and labor history.
no war but class war 🌹
fantastic breakdown of why the DSA NPC should abandon "confidentiality agreements"! I'm very excited to work with Red Star NPC members to bring on a new era of radical transparency and member engagement in the national organization
