I am on the academic job market 👩🏫!. I am a PhD candidate at @Stanford, in the Virtual Human Interaction Lab @StanfordVR. I study how groups interact in digital spaces using immersive technologies (VR/AR/MR), through in-lab and field experiments.

Teaching inside VR can be exciting. but a lot can go wrong. Here are some things @StanfordVR and @profknowak learned on what to do (+ what not to do) 📝: .Prerequisites for Learning in Networked Immersive Virtual Reality

Here’s a longitudinal study in which my colleagues and I looked at how *who* you are and *where* you are matter in social interactions in VR.
Say goodbye to conference rooms. We studied 100s of people in small groups over months in 192 panoramic or closed worlds. Large, open spaces improved nonverbal behavior, restorativeness and group cohesion. In VR space is free (and beneficial).

📰New Pub📰 covering passthrough and its effects. What a unique and great privilege it was working on this w the best team! Jeremy Bailenson, Brian Beams, James Brown, @cyanjd, Anna Queiroz, @raratan, Monique Santoso, Tara Srirangarajan, @tao_yujie, & @Portia1230 🙌👓.
New VHIL field study: Passthrough Video inspires awe & is practical, but can cause visual aftereffects, lapses in distance judgments, simulator sickness, and "social absence". We recommend caution & restraint for companies lobbying for prolonged daily use.

What do people talk about in VR? Recent work by @cyanjd and colleagues' analyzes verbal communication within VR 🗣.
What's the language of VR? . @CyanJD analyzed 168 groups in @Engage_XR, 4800 transcribed minutes. Tools developed by @davidmmarkowitz reveal 8 themes: avatar embodiment, sensory process, class artifact, learning, future, real life, gaming, & cool factor.

📔New Discussion Article📔in @commedjournal covers pedagogical observations from the teaching staff over 2yrs of hosting classes in VR. We identify ways in which instructors can integrate VR into the classroom in sustainable, equitable ways.
Over a 2-year, 5-course, journey, VHIL scholars evolved pedagogical goals, curricula, assessments, and role of physical place when teaching using VR as the home medium. @EugyHan summarizes theoretical and methodological lessons learned in @CommEdJournal: .

How do we best train people prior to VR? Our new paper explores how different training methods (paper📑, video🎥, VR👓) can help users better navigate VR experiences, and how these methods differ for those with tech anxiety. @CogitatioMaC .

✏️New Pub✏️ led by Anna Queiroz on how actively collaborating with others using 3D objects is different from simply watching or watching and discussing the material for learning.
Anna Queiroz led a team of @EileenJMcGivney @CourtAnd_ @cyanjd @__Ka1 @eugyhan @markromanmiller @jeffhancock, @ErikaWoolseyPhD & others. When learners are able to create and arrange 3D models during group conversations in @Engage_XR, they learn more.

🎉New pub at #CHI2024 🎉 by @Portia1230 and colleagues on transforming nonverbal cues for people who revisit/visit that interaction after it has occurred.
How can we improve the ways people relive past social scenes in VR? Can we do so through transforming the nonverbal behaviors of recorded interactions? With Mark Miller, Anna Queiroz, and @StanfordVR, we investigated these questions in our #CHI2024 paper.

Looking forward to taking part of this awesome panel with equally awesome panelists! 🥳.
@ARealityEvent I want to thank @eugyhan for coming to present the research she led at @StanfordVR, which was just discussed in this terrific article by @deantak. (More details on all the incredible #AWE2023 panelists to follow.)

🗣️New Paper🗣️ led by @cyanjd , @davidmmarkowitz , and colleagues investigates how people speak in social VR, specifically looking at language patterns and how they tie to presence - the feeling of "being there.".
NLP on spoken words predicts group engagement longitudinally in VR. Self & Collective references correlate with presence ratings. Impersonal speech correlates with large interpersonal distance. 130,000 words studied by @cyanjd & colleagues @JLangSocPsych.

@Stanford @StanfordVR Specifically, I focus on how context shapes group dynamics, particularly verbal and nonverbal behaviors. I also explore how these insights inform equitable, effective pedagogical practices for immersive tech in education. [2/3].

📚 @saulivanx and I (w guidance from Carol Vernallis) wrote a book chapter on how VR can reimagine how music videos are created and experienced 🎥. Personally, this was a unique opportunity to explore a whole new side of VR I've always appreciated!

📝New pub📝 by @cyanjd exploring the role of visual proximity and discrepancy of one's avatar to their physical self + how this can impact different people differently.
@CyanJD & colleagues studied @RecRoom & @VRChat avatar creation & use. Discrepancy across 13 objective features (i.e., skin color, eye shape) reduced psychological connection between self & avatar. Asian participants showed particularly high discrepancy.

@CogitatioMaC In a study with 284 participants, we found that video or direct VR training helped users master VR functions better than paper training + those who trained directly in VR had less of a negative experience using VR for completing tasks.
