This is such an encouraging thread.
New political science grad students, a piece of unsolicited advice: . Take the full formal theory sequence; if it's not offered, go to the econ department (that's what I did). Formal logic is also a great option! . Why? You never know what will happen during grad school. 1/8.

This was a fun episode of Not Another Politics Podcast with Adam Mastriani. Plus the last 8 minutes or so include a short rant (mostly from me) on philosophy of science, so the professionals should feel free to laugh at me.

Great thread. As Jacob points out, there is a serious theoretical and empirical literature on voter irrationality, partisan intoxication, implications for accountability and democratic performance, etc. The conclusions Caplan wants to draw do not follow from his evidence.
I disagree with this -- both because the empirical literature Caplan relies on is not particularly convincing and because most "voters' stupidity is to blame for Trump" takes don't contend seriously with alternative "rational" explanations. Note: Caplan might still be right; yet,.

Although failure of equilibrium existence in one "little" corner of the parameter space of the model I've spent the past two years working on turns out to be true, I am not yet sufficiently evolved to see it as beautiful.
A change in my thinking about mathematics over the last few years is that I’ve come to believe that it is not useful to think of mathematical objects as being “poorly behaved” or “pathological” — everything that is true is beautiful.

I suspect most of these doctors had stats. But, for many, conditional probability as taught in stats doesn't sink in or doesn't get linked in their minds to this setting. We wrote Thinking Clearly with Data to try to rectify precisely such problems.
