How much hotter could it get? While the US Midwest and western Europe are experiencing scorching heatwaves, we have a paper on possible worst-case heatwaves in exactly those regions being published today in Nature Communications 🧵 https://t.co/AhmhEv0aOD

Already 34.5°C at 13:40 in Basel! Could get a very warm opening game at @UEFAWomensEURO #WEURO2025 unless there are thunderstorms.

Preliminary comparison of the large-scale weather situation during the 1957 Valencia flood (left) and conditions yesterday (right). Remarkably similar but now happening in a warmer and moister atmosphere. https://t.co/SfifjM8FGB

The scale of the flooding currently unfolding in Valencia, Spain is unfathomable. This is footage from Chiva, where a jaw-dropping 343 mm of rain was recorded in just 4 hours earlier today, between 4:30 PM and 8:30 PM. Video credit: Nalabcer

The reported rainfall amounts in Chiva outside Valencia sound surreal: 491.2mm rain in 8 hours 160mm of rain in 1 hour (for reference the 2021 Ahr flood was caused by 148mm spread over 2 days and the annual rainfall total is <1000mm across much of Europe) https://t.co/tA0ApTBzCw

The weather conditions, referred as to DANA (depresión aislada en niveles) i.e. cut-off low, were forecasted days ahead and warnings had been issued:
⚠️ Situación adversa en las próximas horas en zonas del este y del sur de la Península. ⛈️ Peligro importante en areas con aviso naranja: acumulados de lluvia de 30 l/m² en una hora y más de 80-100 l/m² en 12 horas. Puede haber crecidas de ramblas e inundaciones en zonas bajas.

Again and again and again... Yet another cut-off low causing devastating floods this year. This time along the Spanish coast. More than 200-350mm of rain today and it is not over yet. Well-known weather systems are today occurring in a warmer and moister atmosphere.
Requena, Puente de Jalance. Més de 300 l/m² de pluja. Situació històrica a la comarca, el riu Magre baixa desbocat. Desconeixem l'autor del vídeo.

The solar PV situation could potentially be more pronounced. Crucial to understand how much worse and persistent such a situation could become in a worst-case scenario and whether such conditions are possible under much colder conditions with higher electricity demand.

"Dunkelflaute" with low wind and solar PV potential Interesting weather conditions today with coinciding low wind and relatively low solar PV potential (pointed out by @JZ_Lpz) It will be crucial to understand the frequency and persistence of "Dunkelflauten" in a warming climate.

The current large-scale flow causing extreme rainfall in France and in coming hours in Italy looks remarkably similar to the 2023 September spatially compound extremes shifted few hundreds kilometer eastwards. September 2023 cause floods over Portugal/Spain and Greece/Lybia.

Let us hope that these forecasts turn out to be wrong. If not, Southern Italy may be next in facing extreme precipitation amounts. https://t.co/nwHtGXeSuX

Increasing probability of record-shattering precipitation Higher precipitation variability in a warming climate amplifies the probability of record-shattering extreme precipitation as shown in our new study led by @IE_deVries.
The probability of record-shattering extreme #precipitation events is projected to be higher in a changing than a stationary #climate at the end of the century, with the steepest rise in vulnerability in the #tropics. Read the full article at 👉 https://t.co/n6kjwZ4ARA

Yet another record-shattering extreme…
🚨 🌡️August will be the warmest month ever recorded in Longyearbyen (Svalbard) at 78°N in the Arctic, reaching an average temperature of 11°C (+-0.1°C). This surpasses even July's records by a large margin, while July is historically the warmest month. Uncharted territory.
