Tomorrow is the first International Day of #Glaciers! Let's not forget the suffering of these ambassadors of climate change. Let's preserve them, as far as still possible to limit the negative impacts on our environment. @scnatCH @WMO @UN

Wastage of Vadret dal Corvatsch, Eastern Switzerland, over the last 5 decades. This Friday is the first International Day of #Glaciers. Let's all work to preserve this beauty of nature!

📢 The 2024 Glaciological Report by @glamos_ch is out, now in its 143rd/144th year. Swiss glaciers are shrinking rapidly, losing 6% of their volume in 21/22 and another 4% in 22/23. Some areas saw ice thinning by over 4m, breaking all melt rate records. 🔗 https://t.co/tmduPNtSTC

Swiss glaciers: another major ice volume loss despite much snow in winter! 2022: -5.9% 💥 2023: -4.4% 💥 2024: -2.4% ❄️💥 The @glamos_ch report on the new measurements just released via @scnatCH https://t.co/fc3CQxfmio The suffering of #glaciers goes on... A thread (1/n)

Based on @glamos_ch measurements combined with modelling we infer the daily-scale mass change of Swiss glaciers. The entire winter was much better than the 2010-2020 average. @VAW_glaciology @WSL_research

This year's weather is a blessing for Swiss #glaciers so far. Their state compared to the reference in early June has further improved and is substantially above average in all regions. Yesterday, most likely, peak snow accumulation has been reached. From now on melt dominates 🫠

Up on Swiss #glaciers, there's still a lot of snow but melt is slowly kicking in. This pic from @glamos_ch measurements at Rhone Gl. today shows the shining blue of a meltwater pond, and the red-yellow of abundant Saharan dust deposited in March. Impressive! 🤩 @VAW_glaciology

And of course we had a great time doing fieldwork out on the ice. Thanks everyone for supporting the observations going on for decades. Very curious to see what this additional snow will mean for next summer! After two extreme years, #glaciers urgently need a little break...

After exceptional melt rates until mid-October 2023, snow accumulation on #glaciers was above average throughout the entire winter season, and the melting is only slowly starting now.

All regions of Switzerland have seen a surplus in winter snow accumulation on #glaciers. A third of the series has even experienced new record snow depth by the end of winter. @VAW_glaciology @WSL_research @UnifrResearch @uzh_geo

One of the best winter seasons ever for Swiss #glaciers! 31% more #snow than usual. This is good News for the coming summer. Our surveys of winter snow accumulation on 12 glaciers are almost done. Get the report with data evaluation here: https://t.co/jKAjtRmX8M

Another day in winter paradise! We were out today to perform @glamos_ch snow measurements on Gries #Glacier. Vast amounts of snow cover the ice! 😎 Data evaluation will show how extraordinary this situation is, and how it will help the glacier during summer. @VAW_glaciology

Back to @glamos_ch fieldwork after a period with bad weather. Today Vadret Pers, Eastern Switzerland. Impressive scenery and a lot of snow 🤩 @VAW_glaciology

Our snow measurements in front of the landslide deposits indicated above-average snow water equivalent. Good News at least for the #glaciers in Eastern Switzerland this year @VAW_glaciology @snoe_giulia

What a great day on Findel #Glacier for @glamos_ch measurements of winter snow accumulation. And a privilege to work in this beautiful but fragile environment! Much better situation than in the last two years, even though not exceptional for the region relative to long-term mean

Glacier measurements at their best: probing snow depth at 4000 masl on a windy and crystal clear morning. Our @glamos_ch @VAW_glaciology snow water equivalent monitoring on Allalin #glacier today showed surprisingly little snow at high elev., but decent snow on the glacier tongue

#Glacier de la Plaine Morte today for @glamos_ch fieldwork. Saharan dust once again made the scene! Exceptionally warm weather with melting at almost 3000 masl already in the morning. Snow cover is decent with 4-5m, even though not exceptional @VAW_glaciology @lander_vt

The @glamos_ch @VAW_glaciology measurement season is on! 🤩 Today we conducted snow depth and density measurements on Great #Aletsch #Glacier. A long but beautiful traverse from top to bottom. Good snow conditions this year (2-5m) even though I would have expected more...

Swiss #glaciers are having a good time this winter! Despite high temperatures + very little snow at low elevation, snow on glaciers is abundant at the moment. (@glamos_ch @VAW_glaciology real-time automated observations) Better data soon with the onset of our late-winter surveys
