Like pulling the plug of a bathtub: an incredible mass of #glacier ice disappearing at Griesgletscher (🇨🇭/🇮🇹) in one century. It felt emotional to visit the exact same spot @swisstopo cartographers chose in 1919. The view was so different. Simply unbelievable!! @VAW_glaciology

Smaller and low-lying glaciers have completely lost their protecting snow coverage up to the summits for the fourth year in a row (e.g. Claridenfirn with a 111-year measurement series). This results in a further acceleration of melting and run-away effects.

Even the biggest glaciers are losing ice rapidly. At Konkordiaplatz, Great Aletschgletscher, another ice layer of almost 5 m in thickness has been removed in 2025. @glamos_ch measurements of annual mass balance have been conducted at 20 Swiss glaciers over the last few weeks.

Only over the last 10 years, Swiss glaciers have lost ONE QUARTER of their ice volume. This is just crazy… The rapid melting has resulted in more than 1000 small glaciers already disappeared (e.g. Vadret da Triazza, Eastern Switzerland).

This #glacier encountered during our late-summer fieldwork looks like a wounded animal. Deep scars in its surface are indicative of the processes of internal decay. This is widespread now in the Alps. A sad sight for a glaciologist...

Like a dying white elephant... The last remnant of the artificially covered former ice grotto at Rhone #Glacier. I was out with @Remi_Camus today for the takeoff of his rafting expedition down the Rhone. We searched for PFAS in the ice, problematic synthetic chemical substances

Interestingly, a tiny piece of dead ice of the former Pizolgletscher still withstands the warming, covered by rock debris and not recognisable as ice anymore. @VAW_glaciology @glamos_ch

These small vanishing glaciers may not appear to be relevant (water, sea level rise) but they represent, or represented, an essential element of the alpine landscape with important links to local tourism and slope instabilities.

Did you know that already more than 1000 glaciers have disappeared in Switzerland over the last 50 years as a consequence of human-caused climate change? One of those is Pizolgletscher which I visited today. Always a saddening yet impressive sight...

Recent @glamos_ch fieldwork on the #PlaineMorte glacier by @matthias_huss confirms what our models had already indicated: massive ice loss caused by the August heatwave in Switzerland. Even when expected, it is still striking, and sobering, to witness a glacier in its final days.
