Statement of Support for Gaza Encampment:
@UMichFSJP
stands in solidarity with the students of the Gaza encampment on the
@UMich
campus and others across the U.S. as they attempt to keep focus and attention on ending the ongoing genocide in Gaza and Occupied Palestine.
With a 38-17 vote, the University of Michigan (
@umich
) Faculty Senate Assembly "calls upon the University’s leadership to divest from its financial holdings in companies that profit from Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza."
In calling on the university to divest from its complicity in Israel's genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, our brave U-M students participate in a long history on our campuses of student agitation toward justice.
Several Jewish members of
@UMichFSJP
, with support from other Jewish faculty and staff across
@UMich
, have submitted a letter to
@UMichPrezOno
expressing solidarity with the student protestors and frustration with U-M's response to the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
Hi Twitter! We are the newest chapter of Faculty & Staff for Justice in Palestine. We are a collective of faculty and staff across the University of Michigan's three campuses engaged in education, advocacy, and action in solidarity with Palestinian liberation.
Thank you to all the
@UMichFSJP
members who joined our banner and poster workshop today at the Gaza solidarity encampment in Ann Arbor. We stand in solidarity with
@TAHRIRumich
and the growing global student movement against the genocide.
The WSJ may see Dearborn as "America's Jihad Capital." We know it as home to one of our three University of Michigan campuses, among the most diverse cities in the state, and a thriving community home to thousands of our faculty, staff, students and their families.
The 'Palestine exception' to free speech has been on full display at the University of Michigan. The Faculty Senate Assembly "calls on the University’s leadership to protect and encourage the practice of deliberative democracy within the student community."
As the destruction of life in Gaza continues and as student protests escalate across the country, we've recently received a wave of requests asking how to join Faculty and Staff for Justice in Palestine. If you are UM staff or faculty, you can join us at .
We are happy to be one of 80 (and that number grows each day) faculty and staff organizations across the United States working for justice for Palestinians.
With 80 groups on campuses across the country, the Faculty for Justice in Palestine national network announces its formation and commitment to the cause of Palestinian liberation.
“Academics Form New National Group to Advocate for Justice in Palestine”
Urgent warnings from
@ACLUofMichigan
to
@UMichPrezOno
: the proposed protest ban "risks chilling free speech expression on campus," "can result in discriminatory enforcement," and may "lead to racial disparities in student discipline and campus policing."
Our colleagues led by the Islamophobia Working Group have just released the following report (linked below) highlighting "shortcomings in crisis response and communications regarding the experiences of Palestinian, Arab, and Muslim students, staff, and faculty on campus."
We watch in horror as Israel commits scholasticide against Palestinians. Solidarity with Professor Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian of Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Solidarity with
@fsjp_cbt
and student protestors at Columbia. Solidarity here on our campuses with
@TAHRIRumich
.
Renowned feminist scholar Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian of
@HebrewU
was arrested by Israeli police at her home in Jerusalem. As part of Israel’s
#scholasticide
she was arrested on the charge of incitement to violence.
#FreeNadera
now, drop all charges against her &
#EndScholasticide
U-M students, faculty, and staff on all three campuses: REGISTER NOW for the people’s referendum and join the movement to tell the university & regents - DIVEST, DON’T ARREST‼️ 🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸
Ahead of the new semester, we want to amplify the work of UM student leaders:
@SAFEumich
,
@JVPumich
,
@TAHRIRumich
. As Palestine solidarity movements face repression at UM and nationwide, we fight for the right of all students, staff, and faculty to demand Palestinian liberation.
Last week our members published a
@michigandaily
op-ed responding to the horrific suppression of free speech and activism regarding Palestinian human rights at the University of Michigan.
Please join us for an April 19 teach-in on Academic Freedom, Free Speech, and Campus Protest, with lightning talks from UMich faculty Charles Davis III, Leila Kawar, Rebekah Modrak, Alan Wald, and Justin Mitchell. Registration link in reply below. RSVP at .
University of Michigan leadership has intensified its efforts to create a hostile environment for Palestinian and pro-Palestine students, staff, and faculty across our campuses. You can write to university leadership here:
@michigandaily
We believe that
@umich
must join "the nonviolent movement of concerned people everywhere, calling out atrocities against humanity, wherever they may be and divesting from companies that facilitate illegal occupation, apartheid and genocide."
On Monday night, NYU President Linda Mills ordered the violent arrest of ~140 faculty and students (including our entire social media team). Please read this letter by
@aaup_nyu
in response:
"the censuring of pro-Palestinian and anti-Zionist voices on campus is just the latest wedge used by actors who have long opposed the core values of a university and reject the role that institutions of higher education play in preserving a democracy."
@UMich
"Your students are grappling with the largest social, moral, ethical, and legal questions of this moment in history: Genocide. Famine. War crimes. Crimes against humanity. These realities shock the conscience – or they should."
Over several weeks, more than 230 faculty, staff & graduate workers have signed a statement joining
@NorthwesternU
Educators for Justice in Palestine. We are proud to work with chapters around the US as a movement of university professionals for Palestinian liberation.
@bbalsam
@UMich
@UMichPrezOno
Every name is listed on the letter delivered to President Ono. We made the decision to redact the names on social media because we didn't ask signatories for explicit permission to post their names publicly.

@NationalSJP
"The passage of these measures by the U-M Faculty Senate Assembly reflects a growing movement among faculty members, spurred by student advocacy, to call for universities to divest from companies that benefit from the Gaza genocide."
Every university in Gaza has been destroyed. Three university presidents and 95 academics, including professors, deans, and other staff have been killed. Upwards of 88,000 students’ educations are halted. All institutions of higher education should be united in solidarity now.
We affirm the diversity of this movement, comprising a coalition of groups and individuals which includes many Jewish members of the university community, and Palestinians who have lost family and loved ones to Israel’s rampage.
If you cannot strike:
📋Add a signature line to your email on April 13-15: "I stand in support of the National Strike for Gaza, and the divestment of U-M’s endowment, direct and indirect, from any firm that invests in the illegal occupation of Palestine."
A coalition of 23+ national Palestinian and Muslim-led organizations across the US have called for a national strike for Gaza. The members of
@UMichFSJP
encourage faculty and staff, who can, to support the strike according to their capacity.
Here are some suggestions 🧵
We have seen remarkable student-led activism across the country. Unfortunately, the prevailing response from university administrators in the U.S., including at the University of Michigan, has been to slander student activists, trivialize their demands, and even arrest them.
We call on the university to:
☑️ Provide full transparency by disclosing all university investments.
☑️ Divest from any and all companies involved directly or indirectly in Israel’s genocide in Gaza and/or complicit in the occupation of Palestine.
We are in the midst of a critical moment that requires a leading public institution such as ours to robustly protect academic freedom, free speech, and democracy, and we are grateful to these students for their example of bravery in the face of injustice.
We call on the university to:
☑️ Cease intimidation tactics such as the unnecessary and threatening “Disruptive Activity Policy,” sending law enforcement to homes, issuing trespassing citations, and ordering disproportionate police presence at peaceful protests.
We reject the repressive actions and demonizing language of
@UMichPrezOno
, administrators, and the regents, positing students as threats to campus – in particular, using the mendacious cudgel of anti-semitism – while disregarding the safety and well-being of Palestinian students.
Today, we are releasing a subset of the findings from the (unofficial) 2024 U-M Community Survey on Anti-Palestinian Bias and Islamophobia. Full report here:
