And if you're using DigitalOcean then you might add their firewall in front of your VPS and allow SSH only from your IP. From quick look at Hetzner site - they're providing similar solution too. That's apart from iptables and fail2ban.
Hetzner and Digital Ocean default to public key so it's quite safe. But yes first only do hobby projects on it, then hire a security/server guy to do an audit before you go serious.

What's more, you are no longer tied to a single provider. You can rent a VPS from DigitalOcean, Hetzner, OVHcloud, etc., and configure it in the same way. Automate it using scripting (or a tool like Ansible) and you'll have a repeatable environment anywhere you want. :-).
Yes it does, a basic but well optimized VPS can handle 10,000 requests per second. That's more than most need. Also I agree with this, it's basic engineering knowledge to be able to operate your own server, even if you go back to PaaS after. I'm noticing it's becoming a blind
