Hello! I’m joining
@PostSports
as an editor full-time.
Very grateful to the many people (and a lifelong love of grammar) who’ve helped me get here. Excited for the opportunity to keep working in this newsroom. ✌🏼
Sam Kerr, an Australian soccer superstar living in London, showing off support for a star player from Iowa ahead of a game in Cleveland is a pretty cool sign of how huge this women’s college basketball moment is
I would listen to Sue Bird/Megan Rapinoe/Diana Taurasi commentate on just about anything on TV. Basketball, soccer, tennis, chess, Disney reruns, Top Chef, political debates, mass on the Catholic channel, I'll take it.
June 4, 1996: Princess Diana visits Northwestern.
June 4, 2021: Northwestern grad Meghan Markle gives birth to Diana’s granddaughter.
My mind is legitimately blown.
📝 | According to
@etnow
, Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn have broken up
— “ET has also learned that the split was amicable and "it was not dramatic." ET's told "the relationship had just run its course. It's why [Alwyn] hasn't been spotted at any shows."
This “Thank you female fans, as a gift here’s a crossword puzzle” from Erling Haaland is up there on the annual ranking of Most Bizarre Posts by Male Athletes on International Women’s Day
Going back to this: It really was incredible to see Kristie Mewis come on for her World Cup debut in a literal knockout-round shootout and absolutely nail her penalty with her first touch of the game.
Really nice to see Sam Mewis's live reaction here:
“I’m like a Victorian child with pneumonia.” Nicholas Galitzine joins his “The Idea of You” co-star Anne Hathaway to talk on-screen chemistry, boy-band energy, and their shared love of

news via
@SoccerInsider
: The Spirit has reached a multiyear deal to play all of its home games at Audi Field.
Includes all regular season matches, potential playoff games and the early-season Challenge Cup for a minimum of 14 home dates:
The Americans did not win the World Cup but an American did win the award for the Most Dramatic Reading of a Penalty Awarding Announcement and for that we can all be grateful
Grant Wahl helped me and a whole generation learn about, understand and fall in love with soccer. He went out of his way to help people who wanted to break into the world of soccer journalism and media and offer a helping hand.
Just devastated. Sending love to his family.
Not a groundbreaking opinion, but one of my main takeaways through 70 minutes of this match is that Naomi Girma is a vital player for this iteration of the USWNT
Re-upping today's uniform trivia for the night crowd:
Last time Alex Morgan wore a number other than No. 13 for the USWNT: Nov. 27, 2010
Last time Becky Sauerbrunn wore a number other than No. 4 for the USWNT: April 2, 2011
Some news! I’ll be (remotely) interning with
@SInow
this winter.
I’ve been a Sports Illustrated reader since I was a kid. Incredibly grateful for the opportunity to join and learn at one of the most iconic places in sports journalism.
We've officially reached the most chaotic moment of this already chaotic year: Northwestern's College Football Playoff ranking is higher than its U.S. News and World Report ranking. 🤯
The beauty of college football is in its consistent dedication to providing games with plausible baseball game scorelines but also plausible basketball game scorelines. The dichotomy of man
Among other things, I asked the Spirit's USWNT players today about their celebrity shoutouts in yesterday's now-viral roster release video.
(Trinity Rodman's "Mine was cool. Uncle Shaq." is an excellent quote.)
You: It's Game 6 of the Stanley Cup finals. Important b/c it is Postseason Hockey
Me: It's Game 6 of the Stanley Cup finals. Important b/c it is only the second time ever in the four major men's U.S. sports that the title game/series is between two teams with singular-noun names
So two years ago, my previously-sports-apathetic grandma decided she needed a new hobby. She chose Northwestern basketball.
Tonight in NJ, she saw a win in person, and even better, met her favorite player. Thanks for posing,
@dererk5
, and thanks to sports for being awesome.
As multiple people have pointed out, the fact that this is not, as the caption says, a crossword puzzle but actually a word search somehow makes it even better
I keep coming back to this tweet. If a 23-year-old saying the words “I wish my leg broke earlier in the season” is not a clear red flag that something is wrong in your sport, I’m not sure what is.
devastated. heartbroken. In so much disbelief rn, I wish my leg broke earlier in the season so y’all could see this team is much more than the quarterback. I thought results matter. 13-0 and this roster matches up across any team in those top 4 rankings. I am so sorry. Go Noles!
At 16 years, 2 months and 5 days, Chloe Ricketts is the youngest goalscorer in NWSL history.
From the press box, I heard a young girl yell “Chloe scored, Dad!” right after this went in.

Getting into a fight with your club teammate-turned-international foe … the referee pausing the game to make you two resolve your conflict … then immediately scoring an headed equalizer off a beautiful corner … soap opera writers wish they could write that script!
First Northwestern game I covered as a student (10/3/17, men's soccer) ➡️ what's likely the last (1/1/21, Citrus Bowl).
It's been a blast covering the Wildcats for
@thedailynu
these four years. Still have some stories to come, but for now, thanks so much for following along. ✌️
In today's presser,
@thepeterwarren
asked a question we've heard from many NU students (after admin said it wasn't safe for half the student body to come to campus): What would you say to non-athlete students who aren't getting the same testing as athletes?
Jim Phillips' answer:
Picked a good one to close out the career at Ryan Field, I’d say.
Thanks for following along these four years. Excited to see what the rest of this season has in store. ✌🏼
Some news! I’ll be joining
@PostSports
this summer as an editing intern.
Very grateful for the chance to join one of the world’s top newsrooms. (And mark 5 straight years of working alongside
@andrewcgolden
!) Any and all DC recs welcome!
Some personal news: I'm incredibly excited to join
@PostSports
as a multiplatform editing intern this summer.
Grateful for the opportunity to work with one of the best newsrooms and sports desks in the country. Send any and all DC recommendations my way!
There have been many pleasant developments during this NFL season but I have personally enjoyed Taylor Swift becoming the president of the Isiah Pacheco Fan Club
To repeat from earlier this season: Northwestern lost two transfers to the bluest of the Blue Bloods, had to send out a “Don’t worry everyone, the program is fine” letter, and was picked by many to finish last in the Big Ten.
It just won an NCAA tournament game. Lol.
So I spent my first full day of winter break playing around with spreadsheets and on Photoshop, and have concluded my season-long analysis into Northwestern football’s uniform combinations.
A waste of time? Possible yes. A lot of fun? Also yes. Here you go:
Beating No. 1 Purdue on Sunday, beating No. 14 Indiana on Wednesday, beating Iowa on Sunday. All in Evanston. Feels like that might just be the best week in Northwestern men's basketball history?
A Very Cool Thing Happened: My name is in the magazine!
Really enjoyed talking to future USWNT stars
@missimolexi
and
@trinitybyars
for this piece in the March issue of
@SInow
. On a newsstand near you!
If UConn wins this national title, I think Northwestern should get an honorary trophy for Losing to the 2024 NCAA Tournament UConn Huskies by a Mere and Respectable 17 Points
Very grateful to join a long list of incredibly talented student sports journalists who have received this recognition, and thankful to
@MedillSchool
and
@thedailynu
for helping me get here. Excited for two more years of covering the Big Ten.
Congratulations to Ella Brockway of
@NorthwesternU
&
@MedillSchool
on being named the 2019 William R. Reed Award Winner, presented to a student journalist at a Big Ten campus:
Big Personal News: Three years after its creation on a Google spreadsheet, Brockway's (Uniform) Breakdown has found a home on page four (4) of Northwestern's weekly game notes. Personal highlight of the career.
Day said QB Justin Fields was really bothered by his performance in the Big Ten title game and what was said about him. Day said no one would remember Big Ten title game if Fields performed well tonight.
News: Pat Fitzgerald and Northwestern’s coaching staff will wear shorts for the Citrus Bowl, a source tells me.
NU is 5-5 in the UA era when Fitz wears shorts. A win would mean a fourth-straight bowl title and No. 400 for Hankwitz, but most importantly, above .500 in the shorts.
Before this season, Northwestern lost two transfers to the bluest of the Blue Bloods, had to send out a “Don’t worry everyone, the program is fine” letter, and was picked by many to finish last in the Big Ten.
It just beat the No. 1 team in the country. Lol.
Croix Bethune, through the Spirit's first seven games:
- Three goals
- Four assists
- Two penalties earned
Special talent. I'm obviously not the first to say it, but she's making a very good NWSL Rookie of the Year case already.
Several Northwestern coaches/staffers, including OC Mike Bajakian, are donning "Cats Against the World" shirts with No. 51 — Pat Fitzgerald's old jersey number — on them.
In addition: At around 11pm as I waited for the postgame presser, I noticed that Trinity Rodman was standing right near me, signing every single autograph, taking every single selfie, greeting every waiting fan. After *that* game, in this tough season, that was cool to see
The allegations in here are serious and disturbing.
If these were made known in the investigation, Northwestern has to answer why a two-week suspension in the middle of summer seemed to be a sufficient measure of accountability.
CW: This story contains mention of hazing, sexual assault and suicidal ideation.
BREAKING: A former Northwestern football player is alleging that some of the hazing conduct that took place on the team involved coerced sexual acts. 🧵
Big news for those among us who are Fans of Soccer and also Fans of Stamps: The USPS women's soccer stamp (ft. an illustration by the late Noah MacMillan) looks to be available for pre-order. It's set to drop on Feb. 16, when the USWNT opens the SheBelieves Cup vs. Canada.
It’s the first Monday of November, which means we’re about to get Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana, Red Taylor’s Version and a new Adele album in back-to-back-to-back weeks. Celebrate and prepare accordingly.
Sentences I did not expect to say today: I talked to the
@nytimes
about Meghan Markle.
Thanks to
@brandon_dupre_
for chatting about watch parties, Northwestern and my very important Royal Wedding tea towel!
Here's something cool this Thursday morning.
How making the Final Four was covered by the student newspapers of each of the schools that advanced, from Lubbock to Charlottesville to Auburn to East Lansing:
Happy 2021! After four years and many, many hours spent making spreadsheets, the time has finally come.
My
@thedailynu
magnum opus on all things Northwestern uniforms, from the records to the jerseys to the helmets to the shorts and everything in between:
Today’s first
@washingtonpost
quarantine TikTok features seven of our 2020 summer interns that didn’t get to join us in the newsroom (they’re amazing!)
The last 36 hours of change at Northwestern continues:
- longtime AD leaving
- longtime football defensive coordinator retiring
- the Burger King on Clark and Orrington (seen below) has permanently closed
I need to know absolutely everything about DJ Burns's side career as a multi-instrumentalist, playing the stand-up bass, tuba, kazoo, piano and saxophone
This story is a really hard read, but it’s such important reporting. It’s also about so much more that just one bad guy.
People will continue to defend this site and everything related to it as long as the bigger names, brands, etc. continue to enable it.
Good read here from
@pcattry
on Gotham’s offseason moves. This is a gem of a quote from Yael Averbuch West on Emily Sonnett:
“I said this to her when we spoke during the free agency process … ‘You might not know it but you're a very New Jersey person.’ ”
