Here at Nats Park as fans are making their way out of the stadium.
Talked to a fan who said the spectators in section 112-113 ducked down when they heard gunshots and everyone followed suit. Tatis and Machado opened the gate to the field and took fans to the dugout.
I’m staying at the Post full time on the breaking news team while helping w/ WFT coverage too!
I learned so much this summer and looking forward to improving even more! Thanks to everyone who has supported me on my journey so far.
Let’s get to work!💪🏾
I’ll be joining
@dougherty_jesse
on the Nationals beat starting on Sunday! Always wanted to cover baseball so excited to work with him,
@chelsea_janes
and
@slarimer
!
Heading down to West Palm next week, but in the meantime, check out our coverage:
A kid at Yankee Stadium brought an alien chain like the one CJ Abrams has in hopes of trading it for a bat.
Abrams completed the trade and signed a ball.
Today, I’m walking off the job with hundreds of my Washington Post colleagues because the company is breaking the law and bargaining in bad faith.
Respect our picket line during our 24-hour strike by avoiding Washington Post journalism.
Since 2016, Chad Kuhl has walked to the top of every road stadium he’s visited. This year, he wanted rookie Hobie Harris to experience it with him.
And on Monday, they let me go with them to the top of Oracle Park:
Sources: Gerardo Parra will be the Nationals’ first base coach next season and Ricky Gutierrez will be the team’s third base coach.
Parra has served as a special assistant to GM Mike Rizzo since 2022. Gutierrez was the team’s run prevention coordinator last season.
Yohandy Morales on joining Dylan Crews in the Nationals organization: “I feel like Washington got two of the best college hitters in the draft, if I’m being honest.”
Sources: Trey Lipscomb is on his way to Cincinnati to join the team after Nick Senzel’s injury this afternoon.
Lipscomb hit .400 this spring for the Nationals and competed w/Luis García for the 2B job during ST. Soon, he’ll make his MLB debut.
I’ll be interning w/
@PostSports
this summer! Blessed to have this opportunity to grow as a journalist.
Thanks to everyone who has supported or helped me! Can’t express how much I’ve appreciated it.
(and I get to work w/
@ellabrockway
again🤩)
The Nationals and Joey Gallo have agreed to a one-year deal, according to multiple sources familiar. The deal is pending a physical.
Washington was in the market for a left-handed outfielder this offseason and now they have one in Gallo.
CJ Abrams said he’s almost fluent in Spanish. I talked with him about learning the language and connecting to his teammates.
Then, I reached out to high school Spanish teachers to ask about him as a student in their classes:
Juan Soto is mic’d up in the third inning of the Padres-Dodgers game.
On being traded: “It was pretty tough… at the end of the day, it’s just a business… It was pretty sad at the beginning, but now I’m in a good spot and a good team and I got to enjoy it as much as I can.”
NEW: The Nationals and Wizards are collaborating on the release of new Nike Connect cherry blossom jerseys.
The Nats will debut their jerseys opening weekend against the Mets. The Wizards won’t debut the jerseys until next season.
I’m on my way to the United Center to cover the Blackhawks and the Blue Jackets tonight! Ive only been to one hockey game before, so this should be...interesting!
Joey Meneses was invited to the Mexican embassy in Washington by Mexico’s ambassador to the United States.
Meneses is from Culiacán, Sinaloa in Mexico. Mexico’s Independence Day is Friday, September 16.
Iniciamos este 15 de septiembre con la visita de Joey Meneses, gran deportista y exitosamente integrado a los

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who checked on me or reached out with words of encouragement.
Definitely a terrifying situation, but glad everyone inside the stadium was able to get out safely. S/o to
@dougherty_jesse
for helping me stay calm throughout the night!

Props to
@andrewcgolden
, one of our summer interns, who tirelessly reported at the stadium to gather perspectives and information. He even tried to do a late-night phone interview w/ a fan in my front yard so he didn't disturb me while writing. Made sure he came back inside.
CJ Abrams’ record-setting 47th stolen base Sunday — and his development as a whole this season — was a microcosm of the Nationals’ team this season.
On Game 162 and looking towards the future:
James Wood just hit a ball out of the park in live BP against Robert Garcia.
Dylan Crews, Robert Hassell, Trey Lipscomb, Brady House and Darren Baker also are in this group.
Dave Martinez just got thrown out of the game by home plate umpire Doug Eddings.
Just dusted off the home plate, laid on the mound. A generational ejection performance. Had a good talk with Eddings before going off.
My last
@thedailynu
:
On the lessons learned the past 4 yrs and the feeling of isolation as a Black reporter.
There’s been 2 Black sports editors in my 4 yrs, but there was a 4-yr gap between me in 2019 and the last in 2015. That can’t happen again.
CJ Abrams just LAUNCHED a home run on the first pitch of the game and looked at the Nationals bench.
And then Lane Thomas just hit a home run on the second pitch. Well, then.
Dave Martinez was very emotional when talking about gun violence in his pre-game presser.
Martinez: "I often talk about, you need to be 25 years old to rent a car. But you could walk in anywhere at 18 years old and buy an AR rifle. Let's start using common sense."
We just spoke with Aníbal Sánchez. Said his favorite memory as a National was NLCS Game 1.
Also said he’d consider being a coach if he got the blessing from his family.
It’s official: the Nationals select outfielder Dylan Crews with the second overall pick of the 2023 MLB Draft.
Washington’s system already has James Wood, Robert Hassell III, Elijah Green, Cristian Vaquero, and Daylen Lile. Add Crews to the list of outfielders.
Can you imagine walking back from the library at like 1 in the morning and there’s just a dude in full uniform by the arch? Like when did this happen?😂
* Ahem *
This past season was my last on the Nationals beat, capping my run at five years. I had a blast, even when you all yelled at me, and just want to thank everyone who read, engaged and cared about what I wrote (or at least a few things I wrote). You made it worthwhile.
Dave Martinez finished his presser today by making a statement about Brian Robinson, the Washington Commanders running back who was shot on Sunday. Here's what he had to say:
Last season, less than 10% of the NWSL’s players were Black and the league had no Black coaches.
So
@voiceinsport
partnered with the
@BWP_Collective
to mentor young Black girls in hopes of keeping them playing and improving diversity in women’s soccer.
Random thought: if the Nats didn’t sign any starters this off-season, why not just let Jackson Rutledge be SP5?
He was better than Trevor Williams this spring and Williams hasn’t looked much different than the end of 2023.
Oh my gosh. Ildemaro Vargas just hit a ball back to A's pitcher Luis Medina. Medina just jogged to first and Vargas sprinted past him, beating Medina to the bag.
That was one of the funniest things I've seen on a baseball field.
Lynn went to the visitor’s bullpen in left field to finish throwing. He was told he couldn’t do that. So he walked across the field to the visitor locker room and took his sweet time.
Gave the fans a wave and got a standing O.
For the past nine weeks, I’ve been working on this story about the lack of racial diversity amongst college head coaches. This topic is one that is extremely important to me and I hope this story highlights the barriers that prevent black coaches from leading teams. Check it out:
In Focus: Across the NCAA, the number of black head coaches in Division I sports pales in comparison to white head coaches. As of 2018, just 24 of the 232 Division I head football coaches are people of color
Washington's 6 through 9 hitters —
Before the eighth inning against the Mets: 1-for-45, 20 Ks
Since the eight inning against the Mets: 6-for-12, 4 1Bs, 1 2B, 1 HR
According to Mike Rizzo, Brady House has officially been moved to 3B as expected. House was drafted as a shortstop and said in the past he wanted to stick there, but now he’ll be at the hot corner moving forward.
I'm really sick and tired of this.
Just a reminder that Black athletes, regardless of how they perform, should never receive any form of vitriol or hate from self-proclaimed fans. Can't believe this point has to be stated again.
Someone asked Josiah Gray postgame if he could’ve imagined striking out Aaron Judge twice when he was a D2 player at Le Moyne College.
“Yeah, honestly no.” 😂
FINAL: Nationals 6, Dodgers 4. Mitchell Parker becomes the first Nationals' starter to win his major league debut since Stephen Strasburg back in 2010.
Lot of notable stats in here. This one stood out to me:
“But since 2012, the Nationals have not drafted any hitter who’s reached 10 career home runs. Andrew Stevenson (8), Carter Kieboom (8) and Sheldon Neuse (7) are the only Nationals draftees who have topped five home runs.”
The team best at drafting hitters? The Astros
The team worst at drafting hitters? The Nationals.
@jjcoop36
has a look at how every team has done at drafting hitters over the last decade.
The Nationals have three first-time All-Stars heading to Colorado: Soto, Schwarber and Turner.
Scherzer is left off despite having the lowest ERA and WHIP of his career. My latest for
@washingtonpost
:
Dylan Crews went 4 for 5 with a grand slam, three singles and a walk in Fredericksburg’s 11-2 win tonight. (Probably should’ve had a stolen base earlier, too, but was called out).
After the game, Paolo Espino said Juan Soto did his shuffle after he threw a curveball and the two of them exchanged a laugh.
"I've never seen it while I was pitching so it's funny."
FINAL: Nationals 6, Yankees 5. The Nationals have won four straight series and six of their last seven. Alex Call made a catch on the warning track and nearly slipped. My goodness.
Three scoreless innings for Joan Adon, who saw me swinging an imaginary baseball bat in the clubhouse earlier today, looked at me and said "You look like you've never played baseball before."
I played through high school. Humbling.
Source: The Nationals and Michael Chavis have agreed to a minor-league deal with a non-roster invite to spring training.
Chavis would make $1 million if he makes the majors and could earn up to $500K in incentives. Has a June 1 out if he’s not in the majors by then.
The Nationals win 3-2 over the Reds and avoid a sweep.
Patrick Corbin, who has a major-league leading 17 losses, ends the Nationals' streak without a starter earning a win at 43. Just like we all expected.
A Thanksgiving read: on Josiah Gray, the importance of his role as the youth academy’s player ambassador and his goal to establish roots in the community early in his career
Conversation in my house while my dad and I were watching TNF —
My mom: Y’all are always talking about sports or watching it. Do these athletes pay any of our bills?
Me: well, kinda…yes?
CJ Abrams’ record-setting 47th stolen base Sunday — and his development as a whole this season — was a microcosm of the Nationals’ team this season.
On Game 162 and looking towards the future:
The Nationals win 7-6. Josh Bell hit a three-run homer in the seventh that proved to be the dagger. Juan Soto reached based in all four at-bats. Rubber match tomorrow.
Can confirm that the Nationals are hiring Brad Ciolek as their new Senior Director of Amateur Scouting. Previously served as the Orioles’ Director of Draft Operations and has been with the org since 2013.
Another important hire for Mike Rizzo.
