this is not a gotcha this is a clearly one more argument against mass immigration
In the early 1900s, there was such a massive naturalization fraud scandal with Italian immigrants in St. Louis that it caused the national government to further mandate literacy testing. (Chris Rufo is of Italian descent)

holy shit they're running with this its amazing https://t.co/KLo1Mf251i
This is ludicrous. "A population of <100,000" did not steal anything. Some members of the Somali community did. It's especially egregious for the son of an Italian immigrant to talk like this, since this is the rhetoric nativists used to condemn Italians as all criminals.

@eigenrobot No, if you're Italian you're not allowed to argue against immigration. Or organized crime.

@eigenrobot I like how they only bring this argument out for Italians when you can do this for every fucking ethnic group that came here in large droves. Mass media anti-Italianism on full display for decades in this country while other groups slip through the cracks. ESPECIALLY jews.

@eigenrobot Yea, even with people who were MAGNITUDES more culturally and genetically similar there was still a huge range of problems with integrating them Thank you for this great argument against any sort of immigration in large numbers or from the peasant classes anywhere

@eigenrobot Total own if after that happened everyone was made to feel bad and we kept importing italians instead of doing a decades long moratorium and forcing assimilation. Alas,

@eigenrobot In retrospect, the massive corrupt ethnic city machines of the early 20th Century should have been warning sign?

@eigenrobot Sure but also, what did actually happen immediately after the surge of bad behavior of immigrants? Time is a flat circle...
@souljagoyteller Yep, that's why in 1924 America slammed the door shut because of the bad behavior of the recent immigrants. Cause and reaction, a tale as old as time:

@eigenrobot My favorite part is when they insist you have to be in favor of it if you're Italian.

@eigenrobot “Italian immigrants caused issues so let’s import scammers from a country with an IQ of 70. I am smart.” 0.05% of the country is Somali. Italian were like 6% of the pop in the 20s. Imagine having 100 times as many Somalis. Let’s see how the problems scale.

@eigenrobot Has any American ever thought "I wish we had more Italians"? I'm not sure the majority of Italian-Americans even think it.

@eigenrobot Lefties do this all the time. It's the same in Britain with Ireland/Northern Ireland. "Oh but you experienced unrest with these different people!" Yes, why would we want to do it again?

@eigenrobot Sounds like we should also have "demanded exacting literacy and character qualifications from immigrants seeking citizenship."

@eigenrobot Using Italian immigration as evidence for mass immigration is crazy. The mafia was a serious problem in local and national politics well into the late 20th century. Italian immigration was overall a net positive, but only because limits were enforced and assimilation took place

@eigenrobot @demontage2000 Entire regional cultures in America were wiped out by the mass immigration of the late 19th/early 20th century. Quakers went the way of the Cherokee. Nativists of that era were absolutely correct to view mass immigration as a catastrophe.

@eigenrobot Clearly the Fenian Raids, the IWW, and Murder, Inc., are part of the rich tapestry of our national heritage.

@eigenrobot I would deport Rufo if we could retvrn. I’d cry but I think he’d agree it’s a good trade

@eigenrobot @memeticsisyphus I mean this guy would lose his mind if we added more literacy testing to immigrants today.

@eigenrobot Idk about that but it appears to make the argument for further mandating literacy testing.

@eigenrobot “Is this berry safe to eat?” “I ate a similar looking berry once. I had explosive diarrhea for weeks but I’m fine now, so I would say it’s safe.” Imagine thinking this is a good argument.

@eigenrobot Did Italian immigration make life better or worse for those already in the country? Difficult to measure, but probably worse

@eigenrobot you may think mass immigration from somalia is bad, but wait until you hear about all of the problems we had with mass immigration from a far more similar group to the native population, that'll show you

@eigenrobot The long run is a misleading guide to current affairs. In the long run we are all dead. - Keynes That quote is more relevant than ever.
