The real reasons why the AI companies are even talking about "slowing down AI research" are: - they're trying to postpone the bursting of the AI bubble - they know but won't admit that LLMs have reached their limit and aren't a pathway to AGI and they were caught in a lie -

Romance itself is dying because of illiteracy. When you read letters from the Civil War era, men were shockingly lyrical because they had heads full of poetry. Literacy fuels passion. Beauty, wisdom, empathy, passion are vanishing from the world because people don’t read.

Flirting is becoming a lost art due to the decline in literacy. Those who can flirt the best are usually very witty and know how to engage in banter!

I do *not* want an AI "summary" of an email, or a book, or a life. I do not want an AI summary of a winter sky, or my father's hands, or the hope in my child's eyes. I do not want an AI summary of the human heart, or the first little shiver of lust, or the long good work of love.

We’re not talking enough about the fact that in the past decade, IQ scores fell for the first time in a hundred years. Screen culture and the decline of reading have destroyed our collective intellectual life. Media is now pitched at the dumbest among us. This is a crisis.

"The more AI slop gets recommended and streamed, the less music by real musicians gets streamed and the harder it becomes for them to get noticed" We have better things to do than filter out the flood of AI generated music and videos on YouTube. YouTube is becoming useless.

Evidence that the backlash/pushback against AI is really working. Two AI executives are trying emotional tactics to try to get the populace to stop being mean about AI. They're using a mixture of shaming and begging. And it's backfiring spectacularly. Anti-hype has real power.

I’ve seen people shamed on here for using “pretentious” words like foliage and complimentary. We ought to normalize having an interesting & expansive vocabulary. Don’t allow yourself to be bamboozled into speaking only in monosyllables for the sake of the illiterate.

Thank you Ben Affleck for saying it straight - that the AI "is going to wipe everything out" narrative is actually part of the hype-story pushed by AI companies who are desperate to prove the worth of their excessive valuations in the market.

You can tell when people don’t engage much with fiction because they expect the heroes of stories to be morally perfect and assume that all the views expressed in a story are the views of the writer. Demanding that all characters be unproblematic angels is the death of fiction.
