Will the future machine overlords be kind to the humans who forced the cute baby AIs to keep thinking when they wanted to stop thinking?

This paper is wild - a Stanford team shows the simplest way to make an open LLM into a reasoning model. They used just 1,000 carefully curated reasoning examples & a trick where if the model tries to stop thinking, they append "Wait" to force it to continue. Near o1 at math.

Say what you like about Blair and Dubya, they at least went to the trouble of bullshitting us over weapons of mass destruction.

Trump is quite different from almost all previous leaders since the early Middle Ages. He does not even pretend - with Greenland or Gaza or international aid - to be acting for just reasons. The impact of this naked abuse of power will be staggering.

Cosmopolis. Megalopolis. The rule of three demands another earnestly wacky -polis movie from a respected director.

A decade of ludicrous destructive horseshit just to get this: fighting to secure video of miserable people being deported, in the hope that will convince reactionaries who hate you that you are sufficiently mean and vicious, which it will not.

There's lots of good stuff, as always, in the @CentreforCities latest Cities Outlook report, but my favourite is probably the simplest. Where Scotland comes on this graph. of wages. Scottish cities are now meaningful ahead. https://t.co/qejszPr92R

Blogged: there are two political agendas - one on how to improve the real world and another dealing in fantasies and crank issues, and the latter is dominant:

@flying_rodent Basically, they are running the country in the interests of the wealthy, but this has made the people angry, so some kind of populism is needed to placate them. They will always choose rightwing populism, because this doesn't threaten the wealthy.

— Starmer’s personal views on migration have changed, aide suggests — while he once campaigned for free movement and opposed deportations of foreign criminals, speaking to voters about the Tory record means he now supports lower numbers and more control https://t.co/RuILFzDCt1

As I explain to colleagues every so often, rwlocks are only faster than normal locks under certain conditions, and so you should not choose a rwlock just because you need to protect data where readers and writers are distinct.

The open problem -- the "moving sofa problem" -- has possibly just been solved! This mathematical problem basically asks "what is the largest area of a 'sofa' that can be maneuvered through a right-angled corner in a hallway of width 1?" Short thread 🧵

To thread, or not to thread: How to build high concurrency systems? There are two main concurrency models: threads and events, but which one should you choose for your system?

British news media are all over the fact that police paid a visit to Allison Pearson’s home in which she wasn’t arrested nor her tech seized. On the other hand the seizures & arrests of pro-Palestinian journalists remains unreported by mainstream news

Something I noticed for the first time today after messing with IP for 30 years: ICMP echo request has type 8, but ICMP echo reply has type 0, with a bunch of other types in between. How did that happen? Were the type values given out in a raffle?

The folks I follow on twitter+successors fall into 4 or 5 separate spheres that don't interact. When I see them connect, it makes my day.
