Langurs used to have good gazetted central government jobs with pensions to scare away the monkeys that infest sarkari Delhi. Sad to see them fall prey to neoliberalism and be replaced by cardboard cutouts. Shastri Bhawan/Central Secretariat Library.

Election spin aside, the Indian data seems broadly in line with the global trend-a fall in inequality in the 3rd quarter of the 20th century followed by a rise. An explanation of the Indian context would be useful as would (given election spin!) some granularity for recent years.

India's elections are set for next month amidst soaring inequality. According to our latest paper, the top 1% income and wealth have reached their highest levels on record. Welcome to the Billionaire Raj.

Long ago, the Delhi Development Authority actually employed a philatelist, who held the title "The Collector of Stamps". And then neoliberalism happened.

After speaking on her phone all day, a super-kind librarian at a seldom-used ministry library ended the call with a proud "I must hang up now. Someone from Harvard is doing research here." Five minutes passed. Then she asked me "You are from Harvard no?" I held my silence.😁

Policy elites flaunt phrases like “climate justice”.But they’ve erected a math-fortified facade concealing a “computational colonialism,”whereby values coded into economic models actively perpetuate iniquitous resource distribution patterns-@hangingnoodles

To my knowledge, only two Indian Prime Ministers have provided a leadership so "dynamic" that it bears mentioning not just in electoral campaigns but also in internal policy documents. No points for guessing the other one. #Sycophancy #CommittedBureaucracy

Months after the attack, the British Library remains offline-they actually make you fill out forms in triplicate for every book! As they don't have an offline record of what special materials can and cannot be photographed, there's a blanket ban on photography of all such material.

So now some creep is going to find out that I requested all four parts of the Report of the Indian Irrigation (Scott-Moncrieff) Commission (1901-03)? This is not good. This is not good at all.

South Asia friends, which *essay/book chapter* would you recommend for *introducing UG students* to the postcolonial history of environmental protest/movements in India? We are getting to the "contentious sciences/contending the sciences" part of these lectures...

Karnataka Archives did not have files beyond 1942 for the topic of interest. The postcolonial treasures held at the Tamil Nadu Archives are of course well-known(officially they have all records till 1987)but catalogue digitisation has actually made work slower,if still rewarding.

Anyone managed to get the online catalogue of the Tamil Nadu Archives or Karnataka Archives to work (even if they don't have "everything")?Withing the archives itself, is there now online search or does one need to order indexes? How is postcolonial material in Karnataka Archives?

Seen in a departmental record room. Too cute (complete with speech bubbles!) to have been procured via a government tender, so must appreciate the private efforts of whichever functionary who got it.
