To date, I have identified 38 market gardens in #Pompeii. These include small plots in houses for growing vegetables & herbs, orchards, vineyards, and commercial flower gardens! Here's an example of what they looked like - many have been replanted by @pompeii_sites today. šŸ‡šŸ„¬

The discovery of a lavish winery in Rome reveals how winemaking was reimagined as a form of theatre to entertain the elite. @emlynkd @instclasstudies explains the significance of the discovery to @charlottelytton @washingtonpost šŸ‘‡

At the banquets of ancient Rome, there was no skimping on dinnertime entertainment. And, according to a recent study, sport for elite guests included something rarer, too: winemaking as a form of theater.

No matter how many years I study Pompeii, this kind of discovery never fails to make me emotional. So sad.

New discovery: two skeletons found beneath a collapsed wall in #Pompeii. Turmoil, confusion, attempted escapes and, in the meantime, an earthquake, showers of pumice, volcanic ash and hot gases.

A little emotional for me to celebrate #InternationalWomansDay by standing at the spot in #Pompeii where two of my archaeological heroines were photographed. Wilhelmina Jashemski and Tatiana Warscher inspire me to do the work I do in Pompeii. Image 1: https://t.co/T3Dyuy6n9v

Seneca’s description continues: ā€˜statues split, some people have lost their minds & wander about in their madness’. The relief from the household shrine of Caecilius Iucundus in #Pompeii shows the damage wrought by the earthquake in the Forum: the rocking of the Temple of Jupiter

According to Seneca, the earthquake that shook the Vesuvian area happened today in AD63. In his description he reassures the reader that a flock of 600 sheep that died on Vesuvius didn’t die of fear but of exposure to lethal gases. #Pompeii #earthquake

Whenever I go to a bar or restaurant with my wife I always open the door for her and allow her to go in first. This looks like chivalry, but really I just don't want to have to speak to the person who greets you and asks if you have a reservation.
