I’ve been teaching keto using *total carbs* (not net) for over 20 years. Not everyone needs a strict ketogenic diet, but it’s amazing the beneficial changes many ppl experience switching from net carbs to total. For some, it makes all the difference for weight loss & blood sugar.

In Keto Adaptation, your body burns fat for fuel vs carbs - muscle is spared, fat is burned. When ‘fat adapted’, carbs aren't needed for energy. Instead, you tap into a more abundant source of energy - fat. You can only have ONE source of fuel - carbs OR fat. You can’t have both.

A paper covering 15 risk factors for chronic kidney disease did NOT EVEN MENTION a high protein intake. The biggest risk factors for CKD are type 2 diabetes & hypertension, so if there’s anything to cut back on when it comes to diet and CKD, focus on cutting carbs, not protein.

Recent 22 y/o BF T2DM on insulin since sophomore year in high school, A1c 8%, weight 220 pounds. Goes Keto, off insulin in 2 weeks, A1c 6.5%, weight 200 pounds. Insulin was treating the food. At least give children a choice: keto vs insulin!

👎 Just say, "No!" to Carbs 👎 … both sugar and starch. Think delicious proteins like beautiful cuts of steak and fats (in limited quantities), like avocado, and non-starchy vegetables. If trying to lose weight, stick to 20 grams TOTAL carbs a day.

WHY BREAD IS NOT HEALTHY I get it. Making a sandwich for lunch feels like a quick & easy option. But remember, bread (especially wholewheat bread) is a refined carbohydrate, which means it's responsible for spiking your blood-sugar levels WAY up before crashing them WAY down.

To the universe: ‘Ketones are molecules that carry energy, and might even have anti-inflammatory effects. Ketones are nothing to be afraid of!’ (Unless you feel sick and have no insulin, like untreated Type 1 diabetes, or taking an SGLT2 inhibitor—which I am not referring to!)

BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS Keto is not restrictive. You can eat bacon & eggs for any meal of your day! Restrictive is always being tired, taking meds every day, struggling to fit into clothes! We prefer restricting carbs vs. dealing with all of that.

As far as I know, only one MD asked to review Atkins' clinical data, Dr. Eric Westman, Duke University. He concluded, Atkins was right, we should have been looking at blood sugar and insulin. His book can help you prevent or reverse pre-diabetes. @drericwestman

TRUTH ABOUT ACID REFLUX: Do you have heartburn (acid reflux, GERD)? Avoiding favorite foods/drinks, as you heard they're heartburn triggers? Coffee, tomato sauce, sausages, other acidic, spicy, & fatty foods DO NOT cause heartburn-CARBS eaten with them do!

Selenium is a trace mineral needed for healthy immune function, antioxidant activity (helps to recycle glutathione – the body’s “master antioxidant”), and converting the inactive thyroid hormone T4 into the active form, T3. Keto diets can provide plenty of selenium. ✅

Thank you for this excellent review of the science, @LowCarbRD . In 20 yrs of clinical research and practice using LCHF/keto, I’ve never even mentioned reducing omega 6s, and it works wonderfully. Just cutting carbs gets the job done! @bschermd @DietDoctor

👎 Just say, "No!" to Carbs 👎 … both sugar and starch. Think delicious proteins like beautiful cuts of steak and fats (in limited quantities), like avocado, and non-starchy vegetables. If trying to lose weight, stick to 20 grams TOTAL carbs a day.

Keto is about one thing only: keeping your TOTAL Carbohydrate Intake LOW. That's right -- keep your total carb intake low and you're on a ketogenic diet! No apps, meters, powders, or potions required. MCT oil? Collagen powder? Fat bombs? Nope, nope, and nope. Not needed.
