Happy 70th Birthday to the King of Action, Jackie Chan! About four years back I did a comprehensive video on his signature POLICE STORY franchise, from the original all the way to the reboots! Check it out if you’ve ever been interested in his work!
It looks like Shinichi Wakasa and his team really knocked it out of the park with the new Gigan suit. Partially obscured but still awesome. Can’t wait to see it in action (probably against Godzilla).
Takashi Yamazaki is interested in using Hollywood actors for his next film.
“If you know any A-List Talent who loved 'Godzilla' so much they'd do it for one-fifth their normal rate, let me know.”
Gamera 2 and 3 are pretty good, but did either of them have a song as EPIC as The Myth that was performed on tv while Gamera and Gyaos duked it out on stage? Didn’t think so.
The movie is just aight, but this scene forever solidified my opinion that Godzilla should have hard jagged spines going forward. Wish they did stuff like this more often
On the 70th birthday of Jackie Chan, I cannot recommend enough his 1985 milestone and masterwork POLICE STORY, of which he wrote, directed, financed, starred in, and sang the final song to. Probably the peak of the action genre, it is not hard to find online and streaming.
I do not buy for one moment that North Korea gave that much of a shit about a Seth Rogan comedy to actually massively hack Sony/actually threaten theaters and it was all a marketing ploy (the actual hack was just Sony incompetent security and they played into it)
what’s the lowest stakes conspiracy theory you have? i think airplane mode is a hoax because they don’t want you texting your friends and telling them you’re not having fun on the plane
The final wars stunt suit is showing it’s age, but damn the new Gigan by Shinichi Wakasa’s team looks great and the whole set looks like a big budget upgrade from the hedorah suit. Big plus if they’re using Michiru Oshima’s score from Godzilla x Mechagodzilla in the final short
It’s kinda ironic that of all the hollywood directors to straight up love Godzilla or were hugely influenced by the movies, the one who got the gig for the first American Godzilla had no love for the series
The Iron Giant and RX-78-2 Gundam take Ultraman's role in the Ready Player One movie. This was presumably due to the rights dispute between Chaiyo and Tsupro, preventing WB from gaining the rights for the character. (2018)
Kinda sad that Toho dropped this pretty cool and unique looking along Ghidorah (that also harked back to the concept art) in the Shin Godzilla vs Eva ride and never used him since. We don’t even have particularly great representations of him in physical form.
Shinji Nishikawa really knocked it out of the park when he designed Kiryu (Millennium Mechagodzilla). It integrates that made the original great with some fresh and modern design cues that make for an one of the best redesigns/updates of a character out there.
If Godzilla attacked us in real life, the response would be that we just have to live with Godzilla attacking us every now and then and get back to work
I’ve always loved the look for Godzilla 2000 but the Toho Authentic Visual books really highlight all the great things about him from a lot of angles we never got in the film.
We really didn’t get to see the full suit they made for Gamera Super Monster in the film itself but this old Japanese commercial gives a much longer look at it
Bi-yearly reminder that the late artist Yasushi Nirasawa did some concept and non-concept designs for Godzilla and they went hard. Love these alternate takes on millennium style designs.
Yasushi Nirasawa’s concept for the 2004 Godzilla is pretty extreme, but honestly I wouldn’t mind seeing it get used in some way shape or form down the line.
The GMK Ghidorah suit looks to be in pretty rough shape judging from the behind the scenes, but it looks like they built a new model based on that design
Though Teruyoshi Nakano ended his rein as Toho’s SPFX director in 1987, his work still lived on long after his departure. This scene from Conflagration would be used in later Godzilla films. I’d like to think someone at Toho thought “Damn, this still looks good. Let’s use it.”

Instagram has a similar problem, there are actual accounts with nudity and inappropriately suggestive pfps but they say it “doesn’t violate community guidelines”
In Godzilla 1985, Raymond Burr’s grandson is playing a Gojulas Zoid toy (which is based on Godzilla in real life).
I only now realized that this kid likely was traumatizing his grandpa considering he lived through Godzilla’s first attack in the 50s.
It’s not uncommon for the Godzilla suits to catch fire but the way Tsutomu Kitagawa reacts to is explosion makes me wonder if that stunt got too outta control.
Of all the Godzilla eras, I think Millennium had the best designs. I loved the (mostly) harder look of the spines and how the scales looked on each. Also how each seemed to take inspiration from showa designs. Shinichi Wakasa and Fuyuki Shinada and their teams did amazing work.
Hideaki Anno has stated that he’s no longer a fan of Kamen Rider so as a result JAMES BOND will now join alongside Godzilla, Ultraman, and the evangelion in SHIN JAPAN WORLD HEROES 😃
For the “Shin aesthetic” they seem to harken back to their earliest/original concept designs and Marquettes for inspiration, in the case of Godzilla and Ghidorah. In another world (or maybe the future) our Shin Anguirus, Shin Mothra and Shin Rodan could’ve looked close to these.
Tadao Takashima (King Kong vs Godzilla, Atragon, Frankenstein Conquers the World, Son of Godzilla, Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla 93) has passed away at the age of 88. He was also father to fellow Tokusatsu actors Masanobu and Masahiro Takashima.
Rest In Peace
The worst part about seeing a lot of Shin Godzilla on my timeline is how almost everyone ignores the fact that Shinji Higuchi directed half the movie but he’s not the evangelion guy I guess so they don’t give him any credit
I agree with people who wished that new Godzilla vs Eva promotion used the Shin Ghidorah from the 4D Ride, but on the subject of designs that need more rep I wish this version of Godzilla from the merch collab got more.
@cardbrobot
Technically he comes even earlier because he was based on a cartoon, but it’s understandable. The whole “mechanized doppelgänger” doesn’t really go well with King Kong and it’s as a whole done so much better with Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla
Classic media’s second go around was honestly peak Godzilla home media releasing as far as the west goes. Kinda wish they handled the rest of the Showa era instead of Criterion
Almost everyone asking for a Shin Gamera doesn’t realize for it to be “Shin” in the tradition the Ultraman and Godzilla (ie being more like the OG concept) it would be WAY more like the friend of children showa Gamera movies vs the Heisei ones or shin Godzilla
I know the movie is out in like less than a month but can we please get Kouji Tajima on the line to make SOME kind of poster for Godzilla vs Kong. Dude’s art rocks.
Hideaki Anno's critical and financial success with Shin Ultraman and Shin Gojira and soon Shin Kamen Rider is a huge resurgence for Japanese tokusatsu.
And it was all done by creator known mostly for his ANIME work. For the culture.
