🧵My town (Burke, VA) needs a new name. I’ve found evidence that its namesake Silas Burke actively participated in slave auctions while he was a judge & owned 9 children. The first child he bought was named Fenton. I want my town to adopt his name. (1/9)
Among the weirdest things I've read about the Zucker scandal is that Gollust and her husband moved into the apartment above Zucker and his wife. Same building, one floor apart. On purpose, while everyone was still married.
Last year my 11-year-old drew a duck for the
@USFWS
junior duck stamp contest that won a first prize in the 4th-6th grade category. Her entry for 2021 went out the door over the weekend. Yes, she did this by hand on paper. And yes, she's 12.
Can anyone honestly doubt journalism has lost its way? This new
@HarrisPoll
poll (via

) shows airlines as the only industry that's lost more public approval than the media since the start of the COVID epidemic.
*Nobody* has gone on the record, not even now. The level of risk associated with dropping a dime on a president in this town has never been lower, and yet no one talked about this *during* the trip? I call BS on the whole thing, especially since Bolton's memoir had none of it.
Seriously,
@JeffreyGoldberg
piece is important and terrific reporting. Where the hell were these sources when it happened? Did I miss the part where any of those who heard the President attack war heroes quit in protest, or went on the record to tell us about this now?
Do these people know absolutely nothing about Tchaikovsky? He was descended from Cossacks and spent most of his summers in Ukraine. He lived in Ukraine full-time for 4 years when he was in his late 30s. His symphonies and operas are chock full of Ukrainian folk themes.
Please pick a day on your calendar when you can find a random person In a U.S. military uniform, take some money out of your pocket, and thank them for their service.
I've done this every year on my birthday for a long time, and it's probably the most selfish thing I do.
Update: Spinal surgery was a success despite some residual pain. Discs were so shot that vertebrae were compressing my spinal cord. Doctor said if I were rear-ended on my way to the hospital, I would have been paralyzed. Also, I did the whole thing with no opioid painkillers. 👍
Has anyone gone *on* the record to confirm the Atlantic story yet?
Just checking.
Anonymous sources are destroying trust in the news media. This is the worst-kept secret in journalism.
When you have 800 words to get into nuance, in writing, you can split the hair between crude oil and refined oil. But faulting someone for *not* doing that on the air, in the spoken word, is idiotic and unworthy of journalism -- especially when the statement is true on its face.
Q Mr. President, what exactly did you hope Zelensky would do about the Bidens after your phone call? Exactly.
TRUMP: Well, I would think that, if they were honest about it, they’d start a major investigation into the Bidens. It’s a very simple answer.
Some personal news: I'm moving on from the

Just watched Trump hospital video a second time. His breathing is clearly labored. He seems to be leaning on table for support. And there’s so much fear in his eyes.
Lithium oxide deposits in Ukraine are more important to Russia than some people understand. Chinese companies have applied this year for exploration and mining permits -- especially in Donetsk. Putin knows that if he doesn't get them, Xi will. Kirovograd deposits are cake-icing.

So I have my 2nd negative
#COVID
test, which is fantastic. But doctors can't tell me why my symptoms are spot-on for coronavirus. Latest candidate: a glob of fluid at the site of my second spinal surgery. Is it infectious? Will I need a third operation? (Cue the sinister music)
If you want to see the stark separation between true friends/colleagues and opportunists, here's a plan: (1) Have 2 painful spine surgeries, (2) Stay in the hospital for days, (3) Disappear from work, (4) Wait.
I've been pleasantly surprised (thank you!) and truly disappointed.
This is the saddest thing I've ever heard.
Hug your children, everyone. Be grateful. Take nothing for granted. And if you encounter anyone in this sort of pain, drop what you're doing and shoulder some of their load.
Andrew, your girl is loved by hundreds of thousands here.
We’re heartbroken to have to announce our beautiful daughter Francesca passed away last night in the arms of her mom and dad. There will always be a Bean-sized hole in our hearts for her. We’re so grateful to have known her love.

This whole Musk thing has the feling of mid-2015 Donald Trump, back when it was one delirious shock after another and no one could catch their breath.
I'm adopting one of these rescue puppies this weekend. How do you choose between such adorable animals?
They're beagles mixed with who-knows-what. Help me pick!
News: 4 days after presenting with what looked like
#COVID
pneumonia, I'm going home from the hospital today. I still have a lot of rehab to do from 2 spine surgeries, but this could have been far worse.
Doctors and nurses here have my undying gratitude and sincere respect.
I'm stuck in the hospital while they figure this out, which is maddening -- but also humbling, because there are probably people on other floors dying if
#COVID
right now. I'm grateful I'm not, and to the doctors and nurses here who do amazing work.
That was a gift in the 2017-18 cycle. His son will enroll this fall, I think. Plus, Ted is a Stanford alumnus. And if you think a hyper-liberal sitting congressman from Santa Monica has any trouble getting a kid into Stanford, um ... no
More importantly, about a half-dozen big outlets said they independently "confirmed" the Post's reporting with their own nameless sources. (Stage whisper: "It was all the same dude.")
The dirty little secret is that a lot of the White House press corps welcomed this deception.
🚨 So basically a "source" made up a bunch of Trump quotes, WaPo ran with it, and now they're issuing a correction *two months later* completely contradicting what they originally claimed.
No wonder trust in media is so low.
LOL. One anonymous source confirms another. I heard about this thing from a guy who told me this other thing, and now some other guy says it's true. Is the first guy the same as the second guy? Will we ever know?
@brianstelter
Come on. It takes time to find a competent CEO -- at least 4-6 months. You can't replace something with nothing, and getting it right is far more important than satisfying the peanut gallery's timetable.
I've interviewed the President of the United States and I've been summarily banned from covering a Democratic nominee's campaign. Newsworthy stuff.
But I've never tweeted anything that was seen 3.4 million times in 24 hours.
Behold the power of artistic genius. I'm in awe.
I just got an Amazon package in the mail containing a giant bag of Sour Patch Kids, a dozen movie-theatre boxes of cookie dough bites and a large canister of salted caramels. No clue who sent this. No gift receipt, no nothing. Family says no one knows. I'm stumped, but thank you!
I'm about to brag about my 16-year-old daughter, who taught herself the Korean alphabet in 8th grade (Thanks, K-pop!). Now she's in her 3rd year of classes and I can't understand a thing she's saying. This is part of an oral exam. And the kids one level above get to grade her.
Made this from scratch out of cherry, walnut, oak, padauk and cedar. How am I doing? It's enormous and it's in my kitchen A year ago I couldn't imagine making anything with my hands.

Also, he's conflating "major" side effects with "rare" side effects. Those circles might overlap less than we expect. Do they? And can we rely on what side effects ordinary people consider "major"? For some, that might be a headache if they're not used to having them. Do we know?
Today I went back into the hospital, a few weeks after major spine surgery. I had a 102.6°fever & pneumonia, and I'm hoping it's only that. (My latest COVID-19 test will come back tomorrow.)
This is disappointing, but a lot of people are worse off than I am.

Here's the funny thing -- and if you've done this for a living you've encountered it yourself -- it's 99% certain the anonymous sources confirming this for Fox are the *same* anonymous sources who planted it with The Atlantic to begin with. (It's not independent confirmation.)
A top correspondent for Fox News says two former senior
@realDonaldTrump
officials anonymously confirmed part of the Atlantic's report about disparaging remarks Trump allegedly made about fallen soldiers.
At this point, if the deal *doesn't* go through...we'll have to look far outside Silicon Valley for reasons why. Smart reporters will have been examining, ahead of time, whether government agencies or foreign intelligence services are moving levers to scuttle it for some reason.

Listen to the opening bars of the 1812 Overture. They're based on a style of liturgical chant in a distinctive Kyivian style. There are Ukrainian folk memories in "Mazepps," in his 2nd symphony & at least one piano concertos. And there are memorials to Tchaikovsky in Ukraine.
In 2004, Navy fighter jets from the U.S.S. Nimitz were off the coast of San Diego when they encountered a whitish oval-shaped craft hovering over the sea. The U.S. Defense Department released their video in 2019 after it was leaked to a documentary filmmaker.
Everyone who follows these steps to success does well.
1. Focus on useful education
2. Stay out of legal trouble
3. Stay away from drugs
4. Don't become a parent too soon
5. Build a talent stack
6. Be "useful" to others
7. Favor systems over goals
8. Learn basic risk management
This is spot-on.

House Speaker and Senate President Pro Tem are 3rd and 4th in line for the presidency. If POTUS and VPOTUS are expected to do this, they would be the next logical persons to request. (Pelosi & Leahy) Cabinet members? Not so much.

Update: COVID test came back negative (Yay!) But doctors say my symptoms all line up with coronavirus so they ordered a second test (not so much Yay). I already had one 2 weeks ago before my spinal surgery too. Takeaway: Number of tests performed ≠ number of people tested.

1. When will you visit the southern border, and why haven't you gone yet? It's been more than 4 weeks since the president tasked you with "stemming the migration" flooding in there. (2/6)

Almost right. Journalism schools have always churned out the same kind of product. What's changed is the information economy. As the cost of entry in publishing approaches zero, you hear more diversity of voices. And then you notice how skewed the baseline has always been.
This. Omicron appears to produce antibodies that attack Delta. It's a more communicable but less deadly strain. It does basically the same thing a vaccine does.
This is how every pandemic in history has ended, BTW.
Israel is *not* there yet, but is considering a policy of vaccination-by-omicron.
"In light of the lack of immediate rise in serious illness... officials in the Health Ministry have recently raised the option of switching to a “mass infection model”"
This is an interesting exposition, but likely incomplete IMO. It's not just our own intelligence services trying to impact everything downstream. I would also put the news industry on the same level as any political party, given the amount of direct interference there. It's a lot
Mr. President, Jill and I are sad to learn of your younger brother Robert’s passing. I know the tremendous pain of losing a loved one — and I know how important family is in moments like these. I hope you know that our prayers are with you all.
Today seems like a good day to reiterate my only Twitter policy: Criticize me all you want, but if you curse at me I will either mute you or block you, depending on my mood.
And since I'm recovering from spine surgeries right now, my fuse is a bit short. Please be civil.
You all remember my daughter (now 12) who drew a prize-winning duck in this year's
