I spent much of the winter in Arizona, reporting on the Senate campaigns and the border. For the latest issue of
@NYMag
, I wrote about the two oppositional realities that emerged:
NEW: I’m told that President Trump can’t get his messaging straight on counting the votes because he doesn’t understand what “stop the count” means. On a call this morning, an adviser had to explain to him that if they stopped counting votes right now, he would lose the election.
I’m sorry I haven’t replied to your email but I glanced at it, vowed to deal with it later, and now the very thought of even opening it fills me with crippling dread.
If you are worried enough about the virus to take a drug that has not been proven or approved to prevent or treat the virus, but you are not worried enough to wear a mask and gloves, what the hell does that mean?
I have heard a lot of predictions about Donald Trump refusing to leave office, but my prediction is he will leave suddenly. The scenario I can picture most easily is this: sometime soon, he travels to Mar-a-Lago for the weekend as he always has, but this time he just stays there.
I just got off the phone with Rudy Giuliani, who decided to call me to yell at me after he read “five paragraphs” of my story. He told me, “it’s useless to talk to you. You’re a lost cause.” He then talked to me for another six minutes and said he’d go read the rest of the story.
If more than 50,000 Americans died over the course of a few weeks at any time in our history, it would be fair to ask the president if he deserves to be reelected. It wasn’t a gotcha question, it wasn’t designed to provoke, and I appreciate the fact that Trump took it seriously.
Donald Trump is attacking Joe Biden for not implementing a federal mandate that people wear masks. It’s not clear how president Trump believes Biden, who is a private citizen, could go about creating law.
Chris Christie has spent the last five years proving that he is a coward and any member of the press who continues to promote the myth of his Jersey Guy/straight-shooter-tough-talker brand is dishonest or an idiot or both.
Barr said today that pepper spray isn’t an irritant, that tear gas wasn’t used on peaceful protesters, and that tear gas was used specifically to clear a path to save St. John’s Church when it was on fire.
All of these claims are false.
I just want to point out that the White House seems to be mobilizing faster in response to Trump’s Twitter account being removed than they did to the violent insurrection Trump incited at the Capitol on Wednesday.
Whatever ends up being the case about the Buzzfeed story, it sure is interesting to see the president and all of his supporters so eager to accept as fact the statement put out by the special counsel’s office.
A person who currently advises Donald Trump tells me: “It’s all hit him since yesterday: ‘You may have legal exposure from yesterday. You definitely have legal exposure from other things. You have less than two weeks to remain ensconced in here with executive privilege.’”
Josh Hawley went on Fox News to say the First Amendment is “under attack” because he lost a book deal. But that’s just the free market at work. Freedom under attack looks like a mob beating a police officer with an American flag because they didn’t like the Election results.
As I just reported on
@cnn
with
@JohnAvlon
, a Republican official tells me that part of why establishment types are so angry with Josh Hawley is because they think he knows better. As the official put it: “He’s not some moron like Louie Gohmert.”
Donald Trump has struggled to settle on messaging to attack Joe Biden. Tonight in North Carolina, he opened his remarks with the line, “If Biden wins, China wins.” The crowd here responded with near-silence.
I am interrupting my reporting to bring you the news that Four Seasons Total Landscaping is now selling a sticker that says “MAKE AMERICA RAKE AGAIN!” and “LAWN AND ORDER!”
Mark Meadows, who has tested positive for COVID-19, was in the White House Residence on election night huddled around Donald Trump alongside Ivanka, Jared, Don Jr., and other family members and senior staffers.
Flashback to what past Trump said about prompters: “I’ve always said, if you run for president, you shouldn’t be allowed to use teleprompters, because you don’t even know if the guy is smart.”
POTUS says the prompter went out at his July 4 event: "I guess the rain knocked out the teleprompter, but I knew the speech very well. So I was able to do it without a teleprompter. But the teleprompter went out."
How disconnected from humanity must you be to find humor in a depiction of a mass shooting of journalists inside a church—knowing, surely, that Americans have been slaughtered in churches & newsrooms, that it’s not a fantasy for the families that those shootings made incomplete?
“He has experience now fighting the coronavirus as an individual... Joe Biden doesn’t have that.” — Trump campaign spokesperson
@ErinMPerrine
, trying to make Joe Biden’s lack of infectious disease a strike against him.
Donald Trump's tweet referring to a "drunk/drugged up loser" is a good reminder that as he claims he wants to fix the opioid epidemic, he remains intensely judgmental about people suffering with addiction.
The Republican official adds: “He reminds me of Patrick Bateman. The inability to show human emotions after what happened to change course is inhuman.”
Donald Trump was annoyed by the violent siege on the Capitol Wednesday — which left several dead — because it looked “low class,” according to his adviser. “He doesn’t like low class things.”
UPDATE: Immediately after the press conference ended and before the anonymous statement was sent out, Mark Meadows briefed reporters without cameras—but he was caught on a feed asking to be off the record.
The press and the public are struggling with this fundamental problem: we do not know who we can trust to receive reliable information about the health of the President of the United States.
I just got off the phone with Giuliani, who called again. He claims he’s now read the story and thought it was unfair, and that he fell into the wall because he has a bad knee. He said he shouldn’t talk to me and that he’s going to the opera tonight. “Merry Christmas,” he said.
I just got off the phone with Rudy Giuliani, who decided to call me to yell at me after he read “five paragraphs” of my story. He told me, “it’s useless to talk to you. You’re a lost cause.” He then talked to me for another six minutes and said he’d go read the rest of the story.
So we have the White House chief of staff on camera, anonymously providing contradictory information to reporters right after the president’s doctors briefed the public.
Sarah Huckabee Sanders has not yet responded to a request for comment about David Pecker’s testimony that she was involved, in her capacity as a White House official, in the hush money cover up, but Stephanie Grisham confirms that Sanders initiated discussions about the story…
While we’re complaining about Marjorie Taylor Greene for substantive reasons, I’d also like to complain about her silly name. It’s time consuming to type. An acronym implies a level of legitimacy I don’t want to grant her. A compromise? In my opinion, her name is now Marge Green.
I’m told that on the phone call this morning, Trump said he assumed people knew that by “stop the count” he didn’t mean he wanted to stop the count. The adviser had to explain to him that actually people figured he meant he wanted to stop the count when he said “stop the count.”
Senior Trump admin official: “The legacy of the Trump administration is going to be that the president sparked an insurrection and people died because he tried his best to not abide by the Constitution... Nothing else is even going to be a side note.”
Rush Limbaugh once went so crazy waving his arms while criticizing me on his show, dismissing me as an “info babe,” that his Life Alert went off because it thought he fell down. Cool of the president to give him the medal of freedom!
Remember that time Rush Limabugh called a Georgetown student a slut? Yeah, that guy was just festooned with a medal of freedom by the nation’s chief anti-bullying advocate.
I’ve been so bored during quarantine that it’s been nice to have so much human interaction over the last 24 hours even if it’s primarily people telling me to kill myself!
The bar is so low for Republicans tonight that all you have to do is condemn the unlawful and violent effort to overthrow of the American government and you can be an American hero.
The BuzzFeed debacle reminds me: Neither CNN nor CBS ever explained how “multiple sources” could read the wrong date on a memo and falsely claim that
@DonaldJTrumpJr
knew that Wikileaks had Hillary’s emails prior to them being leaked. How can so many be so wrong so often?
It’s astounding that the same Republican Party that has waged a highly organized and successful decades-long campaign to install conservative judges at every level has a president whose election legal battle is being led by a senile lunatic who can’t remember to zip up his pants.
NEW: Linda Beigel Schulman and Michael Schulman have spent the last one thousand and seventy-nine days without their son, Scott Beigel. He was murdered in the Parkland shooting. They don’t want Marjorie Taylor Greene to get away with her “false flag” lie.
The debate over Michelle Wolf is stupid and boring and everyone is playing their role predictably and I'm going to burn my birth certificate and social security card in a bonfire and walk into the forest to live out the rest of my days in solitude. Maybe I'll get eaten by a bear!
Trump campaign legal adviser Jenna Ellis claims on Fox News that the media is falsely alleging they want to stop counting ballots. Donald Trump literally announced last night that they should stop counting ballots.
The adviser confirmed that he was watching television coverage of the siege enthusiastically, but noted that the sight of his own supporters forming a violent mob and destroying property and lives offended him on aesthetic grounds.
Trump rally in Iowa is a total logistical shitshow. Dozens of pre-credentialed members of the press were forced to wait outside for over an hour (it’s 30 degrees) while staffers intermittently came out and yelled at us. Then, with no explanation, they permanently shut the doors.
Let me correct the record here: the fire marshal shut the door. Nothing to do with credentialed press or attendee tickets.
No staff yelled at press.
It’s helpful to reach out if you have issues but I guess if you want to do this over Twitter we can do that too.
I asked the White House why the family of Scott Beigel, a geography teacher killed while shielding students in Parkland, hasn't heard from President Donald Trump (they have heard from Barack Obama). The White House hasn't responded.
Imagine being hospitalized with the virus that has killed 200,000 Americans on your watch and being like, You know what? Let’s take this show on the road!
I love everyone pointing out that it’s 1:30 in the morning in London as though it would be normal for the president to fight with Bette Midler at, say, 4 in the afternoon.
Many in the media fell for the calculated & deliberate tactics of professional agitators.
They knew the street needed to be cleared before 7pm curfew.
But they deliberately stayed to trigger police action & get the story they wanted, that “police attacked peaceful protestors.”
NEWS:
@NYMag
has confirmed that Pastor Greg Laurie of Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside, California has tested POSITIVE for COVID-19. Pastor Laurie was at the Prayer March on the Mall with Mike Pence and Franklin Graham and the ACB Rose Garden event later that day.
This tweet came when the debate discussion turned to the photograph of Óscar Alberto Martínez Ramírez and his daughter Valeria who drowned attempting to reach the US this week.
