It’s symbolic the first game Ten Hag watched as United manager was at Selhurst Park away As he left the stadium on Monday, time is running out for him to complete the task he was hired to do, sinking to a new low @TheBusbyBabe ✍️

This Jesse Marsch MNF is a complete all-timer, it’s fascinating hearing him explain minimum width, counter pressing, building up but staying compact in the Red Bull model and explaining rest defence clearly It vindicates what a lot of us tactics guys love and do

Sancho is getting isolated in incidents like this where he clearly can't take a man on On the other win Wan-Bissaka is bearing the fruits of Antony knowing how Ten Hag wants to play (inverting/staying wide) but Shaw can't really do that because he has to stay deeper in build-up

What Manchester United have been missing hugely, is a defensive midfielder playing as a '6' receiving from defence or the goalkeeper and actually turning and driving into space to ball carry. It's one of the reasons Ten Hag desperately wanted Frenkie de Jong

Man Utd were particularly dangerous in the 1st half, cutting Everton open constantly as we saw Ten Hag's 3-1-6 in build up being put to use. In possession, this is the system Ten Hag used at Ajax and what we can expect to see more of from United vs a low block

Mainoo wasn't afraid to receive from deep evade pressure from Everton's players, and dribble into space, it transports the ball from defence to midfield and he can then pass to the attack. A young man on his debut with the confidence to do this at a tough atmosphere is impressive

It's an extremely popular formation to build up in at the moment as it's what Guardiola's City team frequently use. With Casemiro often as the lone pivot what it allowed United to do is create space on the flanks for the full-backs/wingers pushing up

What the 3-1-6 allows is for space to be created wide as players occupy central zones. There is space for a ball out to Shaw as Fernandes is in between Coady-Tarkowski with Martial dropping off, Rashford tucking in and Dalot coming inside as an inverted full-back

United's large weakness is buckling when teams press high, so it was encouraging that Mainoo was happy to show for the ball, turn and face the opposition regardless of Everton pressing. This may sound simplistic, but it's what Man Utd have had a problem with for a while

Last season it was simple 3-1-6 vs teams that sit deep, counter-attack and defend against the bigger teams. There was cohesion, players were performing, morale was high This season they initially pressed it led to transitional issues....

Compare this to Mctominay or some of the other pivot combinations this season, where in the first image he immediately gives the ball back or in the 2nd where no one is showing to receive for the ball. Even United's pairing of Casemiro and Eriksen can't do this

United's build-up structure in the beginning was a 3-2 with Dalot in midfield and Eriksen pushed up advanced into the attack to try pin Villa's back line as back as possible, I found it interesting that Dalot was in midfield in possession rather than Eriksen to attack Villa
