If you randomly picked 100 "decent" companies and randomly invested $400k them, you would probably 3x your fund. Hmm, now where could I find 100 companies to invest in quickly?.
Early stage VCs should (probably, on average) make more investments. Lots of objections, some of them very valid. But the general disdain for "spray and pray" is pretty anti-math. Link to the full argument as laid out by @credistick in following post

DeSci is fascinating - a community that evolves like a startup edging towards PMF. Keeping an eye here and feeling more hopeful and optimistic compared to other areas of crypto.
