I spent the summer researching technical standards and their (underrated) role in shaping civilization. The results of that exploration are being published today: Standards Make the World https://t.co/Ft2rI2DHh4

I agree with @dwarkesh_sp here: narrative oral history is an underrated and enlightening publishing format. I wish there were more, especially for technical standards. A longer plea:

The Scaling Era is out today. I'm actually surprised with how well this format works. Even better than my expectations. It's so interesting to read side-by-side how hyperscalar CEOs, AI researchers, and economists will answer the same question. Thank you to the @stripepress

Send us your favorite open scientists! Science is undergoing a generational renovation. The way we discover and share collective knowledge is evolving. Over the past few decades, open science has gone from a niche idea to an inevitability. But there's further to go—vast new

I lived on this little boat for a year. It was a joy. There's no better neighborhood in the Bay Area than the Sausalito waterfront.

I expect this to be obvious to future historians: The 20th-century American Dream is famously tied to homeownership, but the true magic was always about *garage* ownership. To each their own place for tinkering, maintenance, and invention.

I have, of course, known about @chrismichel's incredible photography. But I only recently learned about his excellent *writing*, too. And I love the website layout: https://t.co/BIJfDXa5pa This is a real gift to the scientific project.

Sebastian has kickstarted an incredible portfolio of early-stage plant bio projects. https://t.co/S9TUKi8rbe You can help. You can co-fund the projects directly via Experiment or you can contribute to Seb's Science Angel fund and keep him going as a funder (he's great at it).

Okay so this Science Angel thing is so damn soul-nourishing. I got to shape a vision and distribute funds to some really cool projects. Here's to hoping I get to do this again! Can't wait to see what the grantee's accomplish. Feels good to pay it forward. Thanks @lets_experiment!

The most fun part of my job is thinking w/ smart people on bottlenecks in science and technology & how they might be solved. Don't forget to scroll down in the FROST-UK announcement to the part where we have a "Request for FROs", with some ideas for inspiration -- screenshot

So exciting to see Convergent's call for FROs in the UK together with ARIA go live! An incredible chance for researchers and engineers to found an FRO and address scientific bottlenecks that can't be worked on in current institutions. Check out their post for more!

@ATinyGreenCell @BugSalome I'm also convinced we don't know the characteristics of great science funders. We don't identify or cultivate the talent, and it's likely a different skill set than being a good scientist. More early-career and outside-the-ivory-tower folks should get a shot at it.

We're passing an important new milestone today at the Experiment Foundation: The grantees have become the grantors. Two new categories launched today: Plant Biology & MPA Innovation. Both Science Angels were previous (exceptional) grantees—now with programs of their own.
