‘We have an archbishop who is a creature of the system, not one who will challenge it.’ What does the nomination of Bishop Mullally to Canterbury say about the Church of England?

Trying to write something intelligent about the elevation of Bishop Sarah Mullally to the post of Archbishop of Canterbury is like attempting to stand still on a moving escalator.  The moment that...

Will Sarah Mullally bring hope to survivors of clerical sexual abuse? If so, she needs to start talking honestly to serious journalists like @cathynewman about the Church's coverups and failures. That would be truly historic change in @churchofengland https://t.co/ew1YTBZJUZ

If you want to prove you take safeguarding seriously there’s one journalist you need to face: @cathynewman. The new Archbishop didn’t. Perhaps bc Church thinks it’s “really not fair” that she has to answer for her record. Why has the Church not prepared? It is THE issue.

Oh @BBCRadio4, you have managed to broadcast a profile of Sarah Mullally recorded in 2017, when she was first made Bishop of London. It’s full of questions like “How do you think you will handle the tensions in the Diocese of London?” Erm…. a lot has happened since then.

@reachjulieroys @OfficeofABC Strikingly, she has been strongly objected to by both liberals and conservatives as regards her safeguarding record.

I think @bishopSarahM will have to work very hard to show that she really 'gets it' and recognises her own failings in CofE safeguarding culture. Too much is likely to come tumbling out of London Diocese. I think waves are coming in. https://t.co/w4xkXEwVCM

This is very poor by the new Archbishop of Canterbury or those advising her. @cathynewman is a hugely respected journalist who has done great work on the abuse issue. The CofE won’t make it go away by refusing to talk about it. Only way forward is openness and transparency

Why couldn't Cathy Newman, a total heroine about church abuse, interview the new Archbishop of Canterbury herself, instead of some stooge bishop who very quickly became embarrassed when he was asked about the new Archbishop's knowledge of abuse?

Not a great start to @bishopSarahM being the Archbishop of Canterbury designate. Many survivors are deeply shocked today since they were under the opinion that her safeguarding record was so dire that it simply precluded her appointment. @pmounstephen if not personally aware of

@cathynewman @bishopSarahM Uncomfortable interview. Not a good look when crucial questions are closed down. I think there will be more to come in coming weeks and months. CofE is likely to make a beeline for the lawyers & laundries to get the new Archbishop to the starting gate!

If the BoL is chosen as next occupant of Augustine's Chair... I predict deepening crisis for CofE. @dioceseoflondon is a disaster site. @bishopSarahM lacks the ability to join dots, and doesn't see what she doesn't want to see...or is told not to see.

House of Survivors sees this as a disappointing day for survivors. Bishop Sarah Mullally is post-Welby the 'continuity candidate' and unlikely to stand up to the senior tier culture where accountability and transparency are required https://t.co/KTeuubYLFe

Telling picture.. the two men who control Archbishops Council, the two who embody the unaccountability culture at the top of the CofE. The appointment today will not address that unaccountability. It's not surprising that Archbishop Cottrell is delighted.

@cathynewman @churchofengland If true, this is likely to be a disastrous appointment. London is rife with stories of the bishop's inability to join up obvious dots. Heavy reliance on reputation management, dysfunctional internal processes in the diocese, Safeguarding is a disaster site

For those who take an interest in centre-right parliamentary candidates being threatened with murder during an election, I'm pleased to say, after nearly 2 years of campaigning, the perpetrator should be in court on 17 December. Interesting charges... https://t.co/et8rVa66g0
