The academic literature generally finds that when incumbents struggle to incorporate a new rival technology they usually lobby against it to try and kill the competition. This is what oil & gas industry has done as they have $$$ sunk investments in wells, rigs refineries etc

Since the 1960s the oil and gas industry has lobbied to undermine governments policy coordination, investment and national infrastructure that would enable a faster nationwide uptake of renewable energy and electric vehicles
