As Colin Angle - the former CEO of iRobot and creator of Roomba - has championed these last few weeks, if the cost of the robot is more than the value it provides consumers, it will be doomed from the start. Nice CES announcement though. The future is cool!

Bernie’s “friends” gifted China consumer robotics (look no further than this week’s incredibly sad iRobot news). And now he and his friends will do the same thing for AI. Get out of Tech’s way!
I will be pushing for a moratorium on the construction of data centers that are powering the unregulated sprint to develop & deploy AI. The moratorium will give democracy a chance to catch up, and ensure that the benefits of technology work for all of us, not just the 1%.

Background for this 🧵: in 2022, Amazon sought to buy iRobot, maker of the Roomba. The FTC and European antitrust authorities opposed the transaction and Amazon walked away in 2004. Recently, iRobot filed for bankruptcy. It's now owned by a Chinese firm.
One problem with antitrust thinking and enforcement is how little updating there is based on experience and evidence. Much less than you see in macro policy--and to be clear there is not enough of it in macro policy either. Take the case of Roomba. A 🧵 .

A sad day for the US hardware, robotics, and smart home categories. The worst part: it was our own government's misguided efforts that 'put the nail in iRobot's coffin.' "We built this thing, we put it in a box, wrapped it up, and handed it to [China]." RIP Roomba

Meta, Google, OpenAI and so many others are hyping AI gadgets but they all suck right now. My @WSJ column recapping my year in testing nearly 10 different AI wearables. https://t.co/2Bw1Vl9o8g

So Treliving's presser was an excellent analogy to the Leafs' play this season; a vanilla nothingburger and a waste of everyone's time. Glad you're taking responsibility, but you're weeks late + didn't offer a solution or an attempt at one.
