We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Mr. Alford Gardner. Alford was one of the last few surviving passengers who made the journey on the HMS Windrush. He was 98. Our heartfelt prayers and thoughts go out to his family. Full tribute to follow.🙏🏾

@EJNetwork @MindCharity Another thought. If a pattern of previous behaviour can be established - as @DawnButlerBrent did in her clip. We can say “person x isn’t here to defend themselves/in past they have denied that” . AND STILL hold space to explore that those experiences.

Any other ideas? . I remember co writing some guidelines on how to discuss racism on air with @EJNetwork and @MindCharity . Appears they need updating and sharing with all outlets - especially after the week we’ve had.

Also vital to draw out the historical context to when holding these conversations . Talking about these incidents as if they just happened overnight doesn’t do help audiences understand its place in our society - and its generational impact.

Avoid discussions on “if X&Y” is racist - place the experiences against the dictionary definition of the word, or the legal guidance provided by @CPSUK . Be guided by the facts/common experiences being offered - rather than the devils advocate.

It is also a reflection on all broadcasters to develop the range required to hold discussions like this. Some ideas:. Listen to your guests lived experience with empathy . Support or challenge their comments with facts drawn from relevant organisations like @RunnymedeTrust.
There’s something about calling out racism that upsets people. Watching @zarahsultana treatment this week reminds me of this. Politicians have a responsibility not to indulge in language that fuels hate. Politicians from all sides have failed. I fear we're seeing the results.
