If you want to finally understand the mythical class of ‘normal people’ (cf. Essex man, Mondeo man, motorway man, swing voters, middle England, Barratt Britain, Deano) that is the social base of modern conservatism &, paradoxically, also the base of the modern left, buy my book

🔑A NATION OF SHOPKEEPERS🔑 The new book from Dan Evans is out next week, January 10th. A title which explores the unstoppable rise of the petite-bourgeoisie, one of the most powerful, but under-explored, classes in modern society You can pre-order through the link in our bio✨

Enjoyed that Compact piece. I’d frame it differently-in terms of overproduction & downward mobility as the middle class collapses-but on a personal level can relate to the professional frustrations & how despair can harden into resentments. Would like to respond fully somewhere

Has Nvidia, along with the rest of the “Magnificent 7,” the Nasdaq 100, and the S&P 500, already peaked for the current business cycle? It’s a bold proposition, but certainly possible in my view. October 29 of this year may well mark that turning point. Nvidia’s cash flow

2. Permission for additional buildings on existing plots, so long as they take no more than twice the footprint of the original house. This will allow densification with mid-rise blocks of flats in back gardens. Here’s an example before and after from the Croydon design guide:

Ridiculous shutting penarth road again after the game instead of keeping them in. Tell us when you’re going to do it so we can plan rather than have to walk a 2 mile detour?

Osbornomics = turning the UK into the ONLY advanced nation that experienced post-GFC GDP growth AND a contraction in real wages. The largest & lengthiest contraction in British living standards since the Napoleonic Wars. That’s because Gideon was happy to watch the BoE pump

This isn't a trained trick, this is a wild transaction. Sea Otters carry "favorite rocks" in their armpits to crack open clams. This otter realized that humans value "things," so he offered his prized possession, a perfect white stone, in exchange for a high-value item, a fish.

The biggest constituency party is unsurprisingly Islington North, with 405 members; in second place, with 380, is Brighton Pavilion. So much for reaching the popular masses in places the Greens can't

The culture war-one fraction of the ruling class (the older establishment) clashing with a new fraction-the liberal class which dominates much of the superstructure & which will stop at nothing to enforce its ‘progressive’ diktats. Imo the old order is preferable to these zealots

Should say also: This is particularly noticeable in criminal justice reform where lobbying by victims rights NGOs have been central to the gradual erosion & removal of basic freedoms & principles- exemplified by recent proposals to remove trial by jury.

Interesting to see it laid out like this. More generally I think this is one of the main uses that NGOs have- stuffed full of labour loyalists who can be called in to provide expert advice on legislation & are treated as sacrosanct or objective despite being anything but

This is maybe the biggest smoking gun in the leak (to mix metaphors). It’s a plan for how to “control” legislation, partly through “advocacy groups”, without the difficulties of consulting the electorate and the Labour party.

Lame Lammy forgot something important this morning. The presumption of innocence. And the importance to most of us of not being convicted of a crime we did not commit. If I were falsely accused of stealing an iPhone from Curry's this afternoon, with my whole life and career

Almost 80,000 court cases are held up in the Crown Court backlog and behind every delay is a victim whose life is on hold. We’re going to change that. Later today I’ll set out a plan to modernise the system and make justice swift and fair.
