We need nature friendly farming, not a rewilded UK where our food is imported and conscience exported. We have the climate and landscape to make this eminently achievable.

Like this wasn’t predictable… 🙄
When Labour announced VAT on private school fees, they promised it would raise £1.7 billion for state schools. With 25,000 pupils already forced out, eight times more than predicted, the policy is on track to cost taxpayers money rather than raise it. A thread🧵

"We negotiated poorly w/ Australia, and NZ, but particularly w/ Australia in defence of our farmers. We were too anxious as a govt to secure those deals in order to show Brexit was working" - @michaelgove follows Eustice in criticising Tory trade deals

Former Defra secretary Michael Gove has admitted for the first time that the Australian trade deal negotiated by the previous Conservative government did

The government as an entity has effectively performed the role of confidence trickster. Persuade farmers to invest over time & promise to protect that investment, then when the investment has been made change the rules and take it. And the govt wants us to do business with them?
Removal of all reason to invest in multigenerational businesses is a short sighted, intolerable dark cloud hanging over an entire industry ☹️ @UKLabour will not “reset” this relationship until that is addressed @agricontract @loosecollie @wheat_daddy

A really excellent thread, thank you @herdyshepherd1 for putting it together. Possibly an unpopular opinion but I think as a general rule we are pretty terrible in this country about doing this sort of analysis, yet doing it gives such clarity to decision making. It's do or die
Been looking at the @AHDB_BeefLamb data on beef cow profitability The data is a little out of date now… But here’s a few takeaways…

If hard work alone was the answer then farmers would be the most profitable people in society.
If your dad’s business plan is to work harder and longer and feed things more bought feed… go and get another job, you’re farm is screwed We’re gonna have to radically rethink systems to make enough to live from family farms

Congratulations to all. I know a few of the winners & I note they are all from multi generational businesses. The government would do well to also recognise that success in ag is a result of longer term investment, & IHT risks severely undermining this. @AshleyDaveJones 🎉🎉🎉

A business will never outgrow the capability of the operator, yet we don't invest enough in those areas. I'm turning to @neXtgenAgri & @farmownersacad in Aus/ NZ for these skills, do we in the UK need to up our game? Who are our go too's here?

Does UK ag focus far too much on technical capability rather than personal skills? Every meeting is about how to grow more/ adapt a system etc but never on how we as individuals manage & run a business. It's a huge skills gap I don't think we cater for. 1/2

Had a good catch up with my mentor this week. There are a lot of challenges out there but taking a positive approach is hugely important, it frames your attitude. If working hard alone was the recipe for success then farmers would be the richest people in society.

Obsessed with undermining independent education supposedly to reduce advantage. Conveniently ignoring the connections made by having an MP father. Like Starmer & his advantage for his children to revise in peace by paying for it, the hypocrisy is deafening. One rule for them...

Currently assisting a great farming venture value their farm to move abroad for this very reason. This is economic suicide, business owners are deflated and can't see the value in pushing on.
“The UK is at – or perhaps already beyond – the critical point” on the Laffer curve and further tax rises will be self-defeating, says Art Laffer. “Instead of raising revenue, increasing taxes drives away capital, discourages work and investment, and erodes the very base that

The proposals in here are really pretty uncontroversial. I might disagree about the details but broadly: - Reform inheritance tax before stupid APR/BPR changes come in; - Tax real terms capital gains, not inflationary gains; - Shift the burden of SDLT to facilitate movement of
It's shocking how much consensus there is amongst tax policy wonks and economists of Left and Right on the tax reforms the UK needs to boost growth & make the tax system fairer More shocking: they're reforms that are never mentioned by any politicians

Sad to take instruction this week to assist a young, very successful farming family examine winding up their business & move abroad. They can't see a future farming here predominantly due to the new tax regime & general lack of support for farming. Long term damage being done

The infrastructure and planning bill seems to be back in the news. My thoughts on this from before; the Dick Turpin bill. Beware of this government act of daylight robbery ...
The spirit of the Zimbabwean land clearances is alive and well in the new P&I Bill, & I have an unpleasant theory about how not only does this provide government with cheap land, it's actually self funding and profitable. This will be legalised theft of significant acreage. 1/
