To replace MSM with #twitter etc, a shift in thinking and responding: Free speech PLUS accountability. Don’t just RT, verify. Abstract persona from data. Ad hominem, tu quoque discredits the writer. But still call BS out. MSM is useless, this is what we have now. #Longform

Visitor: “The media in New Zealand is nuts. They just lied. They didn’t just exaggerate. They didn’t just extrapolate. They actually lied.” We don’t have a media in NZ. We have a government-funded propaganda machine supported by a majority who are told by their TVs how to think

So many with such strong opinions for and against different sides in the Middle East. I’ve physically been there and as a direct result, I’m for neither. Because ignorantly arguing the points is what globally fuels the aggression — but perhaps you’re witnessing that play out

@terrasea I’ve voted left all my life too. There’s no way I’m voting Labour in this time. So according to this thread I’m a divisive right wing nutter. Except I probably walk, talk and act like most of you, bc as a person I haven’t changed. The country changed

@1NewsNZ I saw 14,000 active people on X people view this and just 1% of them give it a like. If you’re placing stock in and seeing into people’s thoughts, then what do you think those very real stats say? 99% of your audience (not mine) couldn’t care or don’t agree. Who do we believe?

@MicheleACourt We all know exactly what a man is and what a woman is. We also know what a trans man is, and a trans woman is. What problem are you trying to solve here, Michele? It’s not one of understanding, is it? I think it’s an attempt to get people to rethink the term ‘woman’. So — no…

@kristinhallNZ Here’s a sane, polite reply: media in NZ have lost credibility. They’ve lost trust as a balanced independent Fourth Estate. They themselves stand to harm the uptake of Māori (I’m writing in English so I’m using the right words, if I were writing in Māori I would write ‘te reo’)

A big lie is told slowly, in parts, turning a little, inching on. Vax will save you from the Big Bad Thing! Now it’s become three vax, and even then it’s still transmittable and you might still get sick with a thing that can be treated at home with lozenges. So: long covid! Fear!

16 NZ’ers die *daily* of heart/circ issues. Many are preventable. Too big a number? Ok, ~100 drown each ‘normal’ year, ~80 of these are preventable. But this is the worst year since 2015. Too small? How about mental health? NZ, this obsession with just *one* thing is killing ppl

@jamespeshaw That’s a very selective reality, James. Zoom out — the broader picture tells a more honest story

@winstonpeters In any org and especially in a government, there is an escalation path up and a cascadence of information down. In a ‘war room’ situation like this, immediate full details should be shared, starting at the time it takes to speed-dial a phone. So yes, he has a valid point

@nzherald Weird angle to take, @nzherald . He was smiling for most of it and so was most of the room. Report what happened, don’t try adjust perception with imagery and headline. How about “Winston takes no prisoners in celebratory speech”

I think someone said it yesterday and I’ll echo it in different words: Some of the NZ wider public are so far down their MSM rabbit holes — I’m encountering more arcane logic and seriously-skewed perspectives that I have to just walk away from. Seriously election-worried

As a white person in Africa, I saw enough racism, xenophobia (in all directions) to last a lifetime. Now as I see/am subjected to those same patterns in NZ, I’m done with it. No way forward, I’ll mute/block/ignore. Real balanced adults, bring it on. Let’s argue with respect. Dan

@NewsroomNZ I was there along with thousands that wouldn’t agree. You gave that small minority the attention they, and the gov, needed to spin this. You ignored the majority. That is exactly what happened, and it was thought through

@TwoPaddocks @jacindaardern Two classes of society, a falsely-confident vax narrative that unwound as critics expected, a well-trained media. For the first time ever I’ve been embarrassed to be a Kiwi. This isn’t good enough leadership. But I agree we’ve had extraordinary events and she’s embattled
