The Latino electorate has been dismissed as too conservative, yet Mamdani won them over. How did he achieve it? My latest for @NACLA below:

By building a politics of community and remaining focused on issues of affordability, the mayor-elect won the support of a diverse population increasingly dismissed as too conservative.

Funny that Trump --- a former reality TV show star --- is smitten with Mamdani's dazzle. And Mamdani's mom is a famous film director. It's hard not to factor that in. Game recognizes game.

This is a really insightful article about the allure of romantasy—especially this paragraph about how the novels contrast with traditional realist fiction in their approach to character agency:

Tbh the political statement of highlighting Puerto Rico's long-ignored Muslim community is stunning, particularly because many are Palestinians and Puerto Rican support for Palestine is the norm

I spent 4 months stuck in my house in Puerto Rico after surgery, and the week I left, Mamdani visits the masjid right next to my house 😪

The white Christian nationalist provocateur wasn’t a promoter of civil discourse. He preached hate, bigotry, and division.

There were signs of nihilist violence tho. Boys who egged each other on to see ISIL snuff videos, the type of which have now become ubiquitous. But you had to seek it out back then. Now it’s inescapable. In just ~4 years you have a generational break due to tech + Trump. Bizarre.

This is from *my* experience as a teenager. I’m not an expert in right-wing radicalization. But back then, the tone was more Trumpian in nature. It’s the kind of fascist discourse we now see in the news from Stephen Miller and JD Vance. Trump himself was a “meme” in these spaces

It’s always surprising to me as an older Gen Z just how radicalized these alt-right spaces — already very fascist and nazi-aligned when I was a teen in 2015/16 — have become. And it’s also surprising how many journalists haven’t caught up with it.

A Gen Z colleague described the "blackpill mindset" to me in a way I'd never heard before: For younger kids today, especially men, there's a pressure to either "get rich at any cost" or "get famous at any cost." They use irony and crude memes to mask the deep anxiety they feel.

Why would you need F35 stealth fighter jets for a counternarcotics mission? The F35s being sent to Puerto Rico are usually used for large bombing missions like the targeting of Iran’s nuclear facilities- a 5th generation supersonic fighter jet known for its lethality. It looks to

Apparent increases in lower-level crimes can be shaped by how active the police department is. Enforcement surges can look like crime surges. But that doesn’t explain what’s happening here. We drilled down to find that victim- and witness-reported crimes are up too.

It’s not just the women and children. It’s an atrocity to kill the men, too.
