Today’s a big day in Puerto Rico because public workers are holding a “national strike.” Across the island there will be multiple protests scattered throughout the day and at different locations organized by different labour/activist groups all demanding fair pay for their work.
This just goes to show how far right the Democrats have shifted on everything. Holding up a gift from a Republican who's been a guest at a white nationalist conference, then calling migrants "illegals" would have been career ending thing but now it's business as usual.
Welp!
Biden holds up the Laken Riley pin that MTG gave him, then mispronounces her name.
"Lincoln Riley, an innocent young woman who was killed by an illegal. That’s right! But how many of the thousands of people are being killed by illegals!"

Cackling at half of the Caribbean and Mexico going to the North American school while all of Central and South American going to the Brazillian school. I'm convinced she doesn't know that these regions speak more than one language.
The guy wears a Bad Bunny pin while dissing Caribbean Spanish, in case you want to know how big the cognitive dissonance is. People love to consume Caribbean culture then denigrate it for not being “refined” enough for them.
A ‘BOB THE BUILDER’ animated movie is in the works, starring Anthony Ramos.
The film follows Roberto (aka Bob) who travels to Puerto Rico for a major construction job and digs deeper into what it means to build.

this tropes is so stupid because we can't just have heroes who are regular people, nah they gotta be god's great-great-great nephew twice removed
Shots fired at protesters in Aguadilla protesting illegal construction.
One activists was hit and is currently being escorted to get medical attention.
The posters are not just people killed since the current bombing of Gaza started, but people killed by Israel in general. H/t to:

for telling me
Biden’s Expedited Major Disaster Declaration for Puerto Rico doesn’t include most of the southwest of Puerto Rico, where Hurricane Fiona made landfall, but those include San Juan, Guaynabo and Bayamón, which were largely unaffected.
Today, I approved an Expedited Major Disaster Declaration for Puerto Rico in the wake of the devastation caused by Hurricane Fiona.
I will continue to ensure the full force of the Federal government is mobilized to support the people of Puerto Rico.
Counterprotestors chant “51st State” (in Spanish. Protesters chant “say it in English” (in Spanish) which leads counterprotestors to scream “USA” (in English) which leads to protesters saying “that’s the only word you know” (in Spanish)
So the Supreme Court passed an 8-1 vote that excludes Puerto Ricans from getting federal disability benefits, once more showing that Puerto Ricans are second-class US citizens living in a US colony.
The Supreme Court rules 8-1 that the government does not violate the equal protection clause by excluding Puerto Rico residents from Supplemental Security Income, a safety-net program for people who are blind, disabled, or at least 65. Sonia Sotomayor is the lone dissent.

Racism against Dominicans in PR is so prevalent that a politician running for governor will make a racist remark against them and no one will bat an eye
This is where the hateful rhetoric that’s allowed to spread on this platform eventually leads. Chaya Raichik, Matt Walsh, et al will continue spewing bile trying to escalate words into physical violence.
We keep us safe.
I’m in DC covering the “National March on Washington for Free Palestine” where activists are demanding a ceasefire to the Israeli attack on Gaza and an end to the occupation.

Biden administration officials say Israel’s counterattack against Hamas has been too severe and too costly in civilian casualties, but they are unable to exert significant influence on America’s closest ally in the Middle East to change its course.
1/x Yesterday, we spent the day in Loíza, the hub of African culture and Afro-boricuas in PR. The municipality was greatly affected by the flooding caused by Hurricane Fiona. While the water has gone down quite a bit, the people are still suffering.
A man stopped his car to forcefully take the American flags that protesters have been stepping on since the protests started but was quickly heckled and driven away by activists. Funnily enough, he was wearing a “bee kind” cap.
I’m in Santurce, where activist group Jornada Se Acabaron Las Promesas are protesting a multitude of causes, including Kamala Harris’s visit to PR today, Israel’s continued massacre of Palestinians, and US involvement in the ongoing crisis in Haiti.
It's absolutely no surprise that the Caribbean is standing in solidarity with Palestine. The Caribbean is an area that has experienced centuries of colonialism that continues into the modern day.

I know all my reporting is in English covering PR. But the fact that LUMA Energy decided to hold a press conference IN ENGLISH for a populace where the most common language is SPANISH is extremely disrespectful and one of the less talked about problems that stems from
Protesters have dropped off a fill size fridge in front of the barricade. Conservatively, I’d say there’s a couple thousand dollars worth of broken stuff here.

If there’s something rich people love, it’s using tax avoidance schemes on tropical islands that negatively affect the people of those islands all the while claiming they’re the good guys.
Yes, you read that right. The wealthiest nation in the history of mankind has openly signed a treaty allowing its wealthiest citizens to opt out of their traditional tax system.
Afterwards, former Gov candidate and Pres. of the PIP Juan Dalmau spoke. He said what exists today in PR isn’t democracy, it’s colonialism. Then, he called out PPD and PNP officials for being “on their knees” and not fighting the FOMBPR’s debt restructuring plan for a plan that…

DC Rally: “US out of Puerto Rico to End Colonialism and Occupation”
HAPPENING NOW: Residents of Puerta de Tierra are protesting the displacement of their community to make way for gentrified housing as a result of Act 20/22.
I think John Oliver's piece on PR and Fiona would be broadly fine if he was just some guy. But for a person who had Lin-Manuel Miranda on his show to rap begging to institute PROMESA and a dictatorial fiscal control board, it's piss poor.
The stuff happening in Atlanta is genuinely revolutionary and has a global footprint in some activists circles, yet liberals barely know about it. I was talking to some family members yesterday who did not know anything about Stop Cop City or other radical movements across the US
whenever i see that “firebomb a walmart” tweet it strikes me that liberals often don’t know about the radical actions people do take, specifically in the stop cop city movement, to hinder capital and destruction of the forest to prop up the police state
Reportedly, tourists are showing up at a soup kitchen in Santurce because their short-term rental hosts are promising them the soup kitchens will give them breakfast and lunch as part of an "all inclusive" stay.

An all female delegation of Chilean and Mapuche frontliners is going to be visiting Puerto Rico in March to connect with local activists.
They’ll also be showing “PRIMERA,” a film about the 2020 uprisings in Chile, at a couple of spots throughout the archipelago.
School board meetings have become the frontline for paramilitary intimidation and violence. PBs and other groups will continue showing up until they’re met by antifascist resistance that’s willing to confront them.
The UPR (only public uni in PR) has had its funding cut recently and students have been protesting at their graduations. This is from the Rio Piedras campus’s graduation today. Students turned their back on the rector as he gave his speech.

Puerto Rico is currently the number 1 place in the US without power, over 110k customers without power as of 1:29pm. The power outage is mostly located on the northeast of the archipelago.
The decision to not include some of places where Hurricane Fiona went directly over is baffling. It’s yet another example of how the metro and, more importantly, TOURISTY areas of PR get prioritized over the ones where Puerto Ricans live.
legacy media tributes are going to hit the newstands tomorrow with headlines like "he was a war criminal but he loved his wife" and "under two presidents, kissinger was the devil on president's shoulder but the country needed it"
fun fact: el jefe de la policía de los ángeles prohibió la bandera de "thin blue line" en espacios públicos porque pensaba que esta demasiada atada a grupos extremistas con puntos de vista racistas y anti-democráticos
Later today at 6pm protesters will be gathering in Parque del Indio, Condado to protest gentrification and displacement of Puerto Ricans alongside the laws that encourage this displacement like Act 20,22, and 60. I'll be otg there later today, keep your eyes on the feed.
Missed this initially, but Loiza, a major hub of Afro-Boricuas, is also not included in the list. It’s the only one in the northeast that isn’t included in the declaration.
Then theres the big one, multiple workers unions including teachers, electrical workers and public university workers have called for a protest at the Hiram Bithorn demanding fair pay and better pensions in what’s been called the “BoriFlu.”
Since the PR Education Dept is making the rounds on here, I wanna point out how funny (deeply tragic and emblematic of structural problems in our society) it is that they share a building with the Dept of Corrections.

Well today’s the day that Puerto Rico’s Debt Restructuring Plan is set to go into full effect. Thus begins a “new era” for Puerto Rico full of even more austerity measures than before.
Whatever your thoughts are about the term "Latinx" are, banning its use is blatantly anti-LGBTQ+ and part of the broader attack on the community by conservative politicians.
Bad Bunny at his latest concert: “The only place where when I have to present I have to bring like 15 electric generators is [Puerto Rico]. Because I can’t trust in the electrical system of Puerto Rico.”
Puerto Rican activist Group "Jornada Se Acabaron Las Promesas" took down multiple US flags and replaced them with the black & white Puerto Rican flag to protest the FOMBPR's Debt Restructuring Plan which is set to go into effect tomorrow. (1/5)
Safe to say Puerto Rico’s environmentalist occupied protests (beach camps) are one of the most interesting social movements going on today in the Caribbean.
Hundreds of Puerto Ricans flooded into Dorado’s “private beach” to protest lack of access and show that the archipelago’s beaches are for everybody.

The mayor of Aguadilla shares photo of the “most gorgeous coast in the world” completely ignoring the gigantic clear cut bald spot spot left by environmental destruction from developers. The same construction continually drops waste into the beach, as well.
