I used to work at a restaurant where most the other dishwashers were from Sri Lanka; we had this one alcoholic, drank on the job type, oyster shucker who always pestered them whether they were Tamil or Sinhalese and even insisted when they answered that "oh you sure youre Tamil"-.
In college I asked a Rwandan if he was Hutu or Tutsi. he glared at me in silence, then solemnly rose from the table and quietly walked out of the room.

I dont know how much it's been improved, but I remember the fact that for a long time, when 23 told you you were x group, it meant you shared matches with samples from people alive in that contemporary category. It didnt tell you anything accounting for migration in or out etc.
